The Bataireacht Bout - Rules, Comments and Discussion
« on: June 13, 2010, 01:09:02 am »
The Bataireacht Bout is an alternative tournament fought with quarterstaffs. The focus is on fair-play, close combat and entertainment. Everyone is invited to take part without regard to personal combat skills. [ Characters with high stats and skills have no significant advantage. Therefore, untrained characters are encouraged to challenge skilled warriors in equal and fair conditions.]

Rules [with updates]

  • To participate, contestants have to buy a ticket. Tickets are sold by the coordinator and cost four circles. Upon joining, the fighter's name will be added to the table of participants [i.e. he will be invited to a group].
  • Duellists are summoned by the arbiter in the order they enlisted. [The group window serves as a queueing list with the coordinator and arbiter on top, followed by the two current duellists.]
  • If both fighters wish to raise the price money and have come to an agreement, they may deposit some cirlces before the duel begins. This money will go to the winner of this round.
  • [When the arbiter asks whether you are ready, two jumps signal that you are.]
  • The duels are carried out in the traditional Ynnwn Bataireacht style, in which both fighters wield pairs of quarterstaffs. Other weapons and combat styles, such as kicks and punches [melee], as well as the use of mounts or magic are strictly forbidden.
  • The arbiter ends the round as soon as one duellist manages to strike at his opponent. [Each attack event counts, no matter how much damage is inflicted or whether it is monitored as miss, dodge, block or hit.]
  • [The defeated fighter is asked to /yield promptly.]
  • The victorious duellist wins a price money of at least four circles  and has the right to keep fighting. One additional circle is awarded for each consecutive victory of the defeated fighters current winning streak. The defeated duellist will be removed from the list [i.e. dismissed from the group], but has the right to buy a new ticket any time he, she or kra likes to.
  • Fighters who refuse or miss a duel can get a refund of their ticket from the coordinator. [This also holds for people who crash or are AFK at their turn.]
  • [If the arbiter or coordinator crashes, all participants will be re-invited in order to re-establish the previous order.]
  • There is no fixed number of rounds, the tournament can go on as long as there are interested fighters. However, the coordinator has the right to refuse the sale of further tickets after a certain amount of time or to individuals disturbing the tournament in any way.

Betting game rules

  • For everyone who would like to win a circle without fighting, a betting game will be held.
  • The goal of this game is to toss a circle as close as possible to one of two sticks located at the side of the ring.
  • The sticks represent the two current fighters, and each circle thrown indicates a bet placed on the corresponding duellist.
  • [In fact, we are not going to measure any distances of dropped items, but a /roll will decide who was closest.]
  • The left stick [chosen by /roll 100] will represent the challenger of this round and the right stick [indicated by /roll 2 50] stands for the winner of the previous round.
  • Once the round is over, the circle closest to the stick representing the winner determines who can keep all bets placed.
  • [Please, use shortcuts with  two lines to /drop and /roll at the same time right next to the two sticks.]
  • [You can guard the circle until the round is over and walk off once the winner of the betting game wants to pickup his prizes.]

ooh... Interesting. :) Nice idea, and making the first hit count more than the damage is a really good idea. And using the group list is pretty thoughtful to.

Hmmm I wonder how the "fair conditions" thing works. Anyways, it's a great idea and I'm very curious to how the event will turn out.

Nice pic btw.

Thanks  for the first comments.

Hmmm I wonder how the "fair conditions" thing works.

I think it is no major spoiler when I emphasize that quarterstaffs are classified as pole arms, for which the trainable maximum skill rank is zero. In case this is being changed as new content is added to the game, I will have to search hard for another concept to offer "fair conditions" for everyone.
... making the first hit count more than the damage is a really good idea.

This rule is essential in this context, because a duel would last for hours (IC time and for above reason). Also, the advantage from physical training is to be kept at a minimum. Notice the pacifistic touch, even though it is a combat event. No one get hurt much from a single blow with a stick [inflicted damage is very low.]

btw do you know what 21 gmt is as PST

PST is the same as GMT -7, so 21GMT is 14 PST. If both times suggested do not fit for you, make a recommendation.

Two minor OoC rules added.

I realized there are some technical issues, but let us just see how this will turn out.

I would like to thank everyone who joined the rehearsal yesterday.

In my opinion, the most important aspect of this event has been a success: Fairplay.  The duellists have been fighting in a sporting way and I have the feeling everyone enjoyed the games.

Summary

  • Xitop wins the first round against Luu.
  • Caraick defeats Xitop in the second round.
  • Fuge wins the third round against Caraick.
  • Racip wins the 4th round against Fuge.
  • Racip refuses to fight.
  • Gilyare defeats Luu in the 5th round.
  • Gilyare wins two rounds in a row defeating Kaipaber.
  • Caraick wins the 7th round against Gilyare.
  • Caraick defeats Sulaika in round 8 and draws level with Gilyare.
  • Esorono refuses to fight.
  • Caraick wins round 9 against Luu and becomes the new champion.
  • Caraick wins another round defeating Kaipaber.
  • Racip ends Caraick's series in round 11.
  • Luu wins the 12th and last round against Racip.

  • Destina

Statistics

                Victories Rounds

Fuge           1         2
Xitop         1         2

Kaipaber       0         2

As expected for such a player event, there have been some administrative and technical issues. To improve the flow and fairness of the games, the following changes of rules will apply for the next Bout.

  • The position of the juror is replaced and shared by a coordinator and an arbiter.
  • The coordinator will sell tickets and staffs while maintaining the list of participants.
  • The arbiter will summon the duellists, oversee the fights and hand over the price money.
  • Misses, dodges and blocks will be considered as hits [ignoring the game mechanics for fairplay].
  • Duellists are allowed to keep wearing their armor of choice.

Definitely a great event, Boni, I had a great time fighting :)

However, I don't think that blocked/missed/failed/or dodged attacks should count.  While this is slightly influenced by the player's stats, I was still able to beat Xitop, who has a much higher skill level in Mace/Hammer than I do....  That's just my opinion, and I agree with all of the other changes, except for armour, obviously.  I think the no-armor adds a fun element to the dueling, as well as the slight unpredictability of hits and misses, which is much more realistic in terms of RP...

Just some thoughts, but again, it's your event and you did a fantastic job! :)
Hey look kids, it's the antichrist Marsuveus!
What? Doesn't he just look huggable? Aw, c'mon, give him a hug.

Again, thanks for your appreciated feedback.

And of course, it is very nice to have this event listed in the events.php.
Therefore, I hope to get things settled in time.

Caraick, I will think again about the rules. My first priority was to offer fair conditions for everyone, which is obviously not given when there is a difference in mace and hammer skills of up to 150 ranks. (Even if we ignore damage calculation, the bias in rolls ls is still enormous in this case.) And yes, the decision to allow armor will of course only hold if skill based rolls are ignored, i.e. dodges and blocks will count as hits.

Maisent, this event idea is supposed to be flexible and repeatable. Don't worry to join in a bit later, there is no need to sign up in advance or attend to the opening. I cannot guarantee the announced time for the next Bout is not subject to changes, but it would be desirable to stick to it as it is listed on planeshift.it.

Ok, but for the saturday i think i will be on 2 hours after the Said time, so i am not sure if it will be still open, probably not - but i didnt quite understand you about it will keep continuing, do you mean that it continues every week? or you will think of another day and different times?
