Can't update to new version (0.5.4) help please.

Please forgive my ignorance of technical issues as I pose this series of questions.  I am a complete novice when it comes to computer tech issues.

I am trying to update Planeshift according as I see there is a new version available. My version is 0.5.3. I have it installed on a MacBook running  Mac OS X 10.5.8. I have downloaded the ReadMe Text for updating and I seem to belong to case two. However, when I try to open the updaterinfo.xml tab opens a game called Bib Bang 4x4 that seems to have absolutely nothing to do with Planeshift. The same thing happens when I unzip the download doc on the download page and click on Planeshit 0.5.4enabler_case2.doc it opens the same BigBang 4x4 game. When I try to open the Planeshift launch icon it says I need to restart as an admin to proceed. I don't know what this means (I am an admin on my machine).

I want to update the game to the new version, but I don't want to lose my character and my development.  Any help?

it seems the game associated itself with some common file formats, reverting that would probably need some help from a mac user.
however, if you have serious technical issues, you can uninstall planeshift and install directly version 0.5.4 (which may be obtained on our download page) which is probably a lot easier for you.

also note that you won't lose your character/development by uninstalling the game as this is an online game. all your character data, etc. is saved on the server. only your client settings and chat logs can get lost at all.

Thanks for your quick reply.  You were also polite to point out a simple fact (that my character is online and will not be lost if I uninstall and reinstall) without being condescending.
