Awards
« on: July 15, 2010, 08:15:37 am »
Well, this isn't really a wish, but something i thought about.

I was thinking of having yearly awards IC in Yliakum, like awards for bravest warrior, best magician, richest person, and so on.

It does not have to be big awards. Maybe just a simple helmet, or something like a trophy.

And this will be IC because what i think is, the gods should present these gifts. Since they ARE gods and they know the people. But i guess there would be this whole thing about which god, why they would do this and entire IC thing why the gods would do it.

It might be too much, but it is just a thought

I have been thinking what's the use of awards?
If the award come with money it's good

there was such an "award" for warriors some while ago. it was an "annual" tournament held by the octarchy where the winner got the "champion's sword" or something like that iirc. would be nice if that could be revived and maybe extended to a torunament for mages, too? I also recall a merchant competition during that event.

I think that's a really good idea if done in a very ic way. It could also encourage players to play out a given character type.

Not sure if this is what you were thinking or not, but if there were spearate yearly award events for several types of characters and characters (not players ) could rp in such a way that they could influence the result of the contest then you might had some meat to work with.

Ie. The octarchy might grant an award to the most honest or helpful citizen. Good characters might try to out do each other, or work together for the greater good.

For merchants there might be something similar... Perhaps it has more to do with workmanship, salesmanship, etc..

For the shady characters perhaps something that involves recognition for evilness, sneakiness, best liar, most discrete, etc..

I could see a lot of backstabbing and manipulation happening with the last example ;)

What would ruin such an event would be if it was an ooc event where people just gather in the plaza and act like players/people instead of their characters.

Good luck.

Well my answer to this is well no.
PlaneShift at this stage does not want to award people for PLing to get awarded. Maybe some how an RP award of some sort.
You maybe roleplaying but you could still be OOC.

There are awards allowed for participants of GM Events.

And really, I would not enjoy seeing the richest char getting awarded on top. I already know that from our liberal party inventing taxes regardless of income. Collect for the poor instead, they need it. :P

No, I had something a little different in mind, however it really would not work well and not everyone would ne ellidgible.
I was thinging separate ic events for things that make sense icly.

In rl sometimes people are recognized for their contributions to society etc.. I was thinking more along those lines.

Example:
Perhaps once a year characters might be asked to nominate a person to be recognized for their kindness let's say. Characters might discuss this among themselves, perhaps hold meetings to hear eachother out. Perhaps in the end a few nominees are presented.
Pehaps a few bad guys (the sneaky, innocent looking type) might try to get nominated... They might try to have some of the other candidates discreduted or killed :)

This whole thing would require a lot of thought for it to make sense and players would need to be decent at rp. A few ooc slip ups could ruin such an event.

If this was like an awards ceremony ( like the emmys or the tony awards) then that would be stupidly ooc. I would never suggest that.

Lastly, something like this was done on the forums in ,08 I think. I believe it was a poll or something.. I think mathy started it.this type of this could be done again in the forums in an ooc way.
You just wouldn't get anything in game.

The "Octarchial Society for Progress" was something similar, giving rewards to guilds for good plans to enhance living in the society of Yliakum.

The winners were the Explorers who were given the Outpost, and the Red Crystal Organisation who were given the Den. The Knowledge Seekers did not win, however got a contract with Jayose to review new books.

From then on, there started to develop differences between players and developers. Some felt a lack of interest in the OSfP activities from the side of the Octarchy, or even worse. Technical issues with the new rendering system might have been one of the many reasons, and the not really diplomatic treatment of specific people gave the edge, with Aiwendil and Lhaa leaving the game, and so the RCD behind as well.

There have been good ideas for contests and awards. But a lack of consequence spoiled it often. Only hollow promises are left. Just like the "Portrait Contest": The winners got promised their picture to be taken in-game. The contest was delayed often. Eventually, Kieve left with known differences. Now noone seems to care about finishing it.

That would not be IC, but i was thinking, maybe they can award the most social? and it best warrior, or bravest doe snot necessarily mean a warriooir that has maxed all stats/ skills, it meanns who is te bets, like at dueling, who can face a monster so tough and not pee his/her pant. Yopu know so long as people get recognized.

Also other awards:

best cook
best crafter

blah blah
