Roleplaying and YOU!
« on: July 24, 2010, 07:32:49 pm »
( First off, I suck at typing, so please do correct me if necessary. )

Welcome to my little class for all of you newbies out there ( Newbier then me... )
First off, about a year or two ago, Ardoin was created. At that time, I sucked at Role-playing and tried to learn my best. It wasn't easy, and Xoel/Akaiddo actually did something good and set me straight. I'd like to do the same for any new guys here. I'd like to talk about godmodding first, as it is starting to grow lately. The key words : PLAY BY YOUR CHARACTERS SKILLS! Not everyone starts off as BloodedIrishman or Chuck Norris in this game. Train for those skills. Far to often I've had to talk to newbies about this. Here is an example of this form of godmodding. Please read below to see it. Note: It has some sarcasm in it.

Newbie: * Looks at Veteran with disgust, and kicks dirt into his face and cuts his head off with the epic claymore he doesn't have equipped.  *
Veteran: ( Please,  look in the rules, godmodding is what you're doing, it should stop now. )
Newbie: ( Ripe potato )

See, with the new update players flowed in, many of them looking for a cheap game that has good graphics and is fit for most computers. This led to scenarios like this. Which is why I'm doing this little class. Please read on for the next part.

                                                                                                                          Your character is NOT yourself.

Many people nowadays say I should have, I'm. Instead of saying My character/ characters name. Plus, when bad things happen to a character, people usually whine and complain. I used to do that, but now I know better. You need to keep a seperation from you and your character. I'm not implying that you shouldn't stay close enough to come up with ideas for him/her etc. But it is necessary to RP properly. You shouldn't just waltz down and say OOCLY I'm gonna go and do this with him/her. This should be known.

                                                                                                                         OOC/IC Brackets, and patience.

Brackets () or [] are for OOC use. Don't leak out smilies and things of the sort. Characters cant see them. Overall it's annoying, and makes people want to hit you. IC is what your character knows, OOC is what the player knows, you should not, repeat NOT pass OOC information for IC. Patience, sometimes in some scenarios in RP it can be hard to be patient, but RP is rich and filling when it's done, making you itch to know what's next, patience is the key, my friends. Patience.

                                                                                                                        Cookie cut characters.

Cookie cut characters are basically copies of another character, or very closely related by to much. It's alright if they're twins, triplets, etc. But personality wise, it's rather annoying. Not everyone can be BloodedIrishman ( Even though he's awsome. )

( This about sums it up, if I'm missing something, either tell me or post it. However, I will not tolerate people being disrespectful. Follow the forum rules here, etc. )
P.S. BloodedIrishman is a long time PS player, and is like the PS Chuck Norris.

Ardoin: So, do you drink moonshine?
Earowo: As long as it has alcohol, I'll drink it.

Just needs stretching, so definitely endorsed on my end  d(^-^)>

I hate godmoding as much as the next guy:

Me me me, oh yeah, and me, X3 I knows what I is doing XD Although those rules pertain to forum-based RPGs, not much is different. (If you don't believe me, Trikitiger -> Teriki Tora, where I still reference to Trikitiger. So nyeh.)

I'm Kurora on the IC server. Don't get upset about her attitude, that's just how she is. I'm not really like that X3

P.S. BloodedIrishman is a long time PS player, and is like the PS Chuck Norris.

Well, there goes my hope for the PS community. :P

Nice effort, Knightspark9. Being occasionally reminded of the basics can be good for veteran players too. I'm not sure if you've seen it but, there's also a sub section on the forums (that no one can ever find) that has some other guides... though for as much as people have liked to debate what RP is/isn't over the years, fewer guides than I'd have expected.

http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?board=53.0

May be able to find some useful things there that could give you some ideas on how to expand your guide more. Keep up the good work.

There have been more noob guides ignored already - this is not the first one. ;)

Nevertheless, it is a good piece of overview and opinion.

Like Marq has said, it is a good reminder. If you just take the whole "Chuck Norris" thing out it would be the perfect basics that a newbie should know, along with adding that the newbie needs to read the settings and stay in them.

BloodedIrishman is a cookie-cutter version of me.

I am the awesome one.

Edit post accordingly.
