Spawns,loot,campers??
« on: February 04, 2002, 06:59:47 pm »
A question stemming from my years playing Asherons Call:

How will loot tables be set up in PS?

IMHO,the single thing that will detract most from gameplay is monster spawn camping. For those that never played AC,this usually results from having predictable loot drop off specific spawns.

So basically, you get a bunch of people sitting around(literally)waiting for a spawn to appear. They can do this \'cuz they know where the spawn will appear and which spawn will have the item.Make one or both of these factors random and i think camping will be impossible.

1)Not knowing where the spawn will appear:
If the the spawn appears in ANY area, then no one knows where to wait for it.This takes away from the spawns uniqueness though(not good i guess). Its nice to know the goblin lord will appear in  for example the goblin stronghold and not in fluffy bunny valley ;)

2)Not knowing which spawn has the item:
Alternativly,if people dont know what creatur name to look for it will encourage them to fight in an area to get what they seek(and have fun in the process). So if the sword of greatness drops off any goblin not just the goblin lord, people will fight in the goblin stronghold to get the item rather than sit on their butt and wait for it :)

Keep in mind that these are only issues i have encountered in other MMPORGS.Loot tables in PS might already be designed to avoid this(I guess thats my question hehe, are they?).Im assuming PS will have
some good loot(quest items?)that will drop off certain types of creatures, but maybe im wrong and the good stuff is aquired in other ways?

Also,PS might not attract the type of people who like to sit around and camp(i hope not atleast). But aslong as the possibilty exists Im guessing someone will take advantage of it :(

Basicly im just interested in how the PS developers will approach this situation, have any plans yet?

Amen Khemri, and well put. Camping was a big problem in \"that other game,\" as well as having the same items dropped all the time. You could make it so that monsters drop a few piddly little items all the time, and maybe a half-decent one rarely, and make the really good stuff random through that monster type (like the Great sword example you used).
Hopefully with the addition of actual RPing, people won\'t be so obsessed with leveling up, which is what leads to camping.

LOL I love that. Developers take note, you must include fluffy bunny valley ;) (I\'m sure Kendrick could tell you how dangerous a fluffy bunny can be. Holy Hand Grenades at the ready?)

Seriously though you do raise some very good points; ones which I had not thought about much. Constant monster spawn camping is a problem in games such as the ones talked about, but is difficult to overcome. After all you will need your best items to be guarded by your strongest creatures. I don\'t think having random items from random enemies would work, you would lose structure and there would be little point in attacking strong foes when you have chance of the same rewards from weaker ones. Hmmm....it\'s a tough one, I\'ll have to have a think ?(

(OOC: Camping is something done when a special item is found to drop by a special MOB. People then \'camp\' that MOB till they find it\'s spawn point then sit on it and kill it every time it spawns. This also leads to farming. Trust me when I tell you that when a creature spawns, it will be impossible to camp. I don\'t know exactly how much I can go in detail so I\'ll have to leave it at that. Camping is a large issue for me and I will do all I can to keep it as something never to be seen in PS.)

Which has absolutely nothing to do with camping...
Thanks, Kendaro. I\'m glad to see you guys are taking such a serious interest in issues like this.
