Shader lag...
« on: August 02, 2010, 01:24:59 am »
Well I am experiencing terrible lag, the game freezes every 10 seconds, literally, when I'm moving around. And it freezes for like 3-5 seconds each time. I'm pretty sure I exceed the system requirements - here are my specs as given by Sys Req Lab -

AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+
2.21 GHz Performance Rated at: 3.978 GHz
1.1 GB RAM
Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Service Pack 3
GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 Graphics Card (512 MB Video Ram)

I'm pretty sure this is more than enough.
When I was talking with another player they said that the freezing is due to the shadercache recompiling itself. My question is, how long does this take? I've been in some areas for a while (15-30 minutes or more) and it still lags. I even turned down my settings to low or lowest and the lag still occurs.

Can someone shed some light on this shader thing? Thanks. Rechs.

shaders are compiled only once unless you disabled the shadercache
you could try raising the settings to medium (for some cards a higher value works better)
also make sure to have anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering disabled, it's *very* expensive

Here are my graphical settings at the moment, let me know what to change to minimize the freezing/lag:

Color Depth" 32
Anti-Aliasing" 0x
Anisotropic"  0x
Texture Quality" Medium
Shaders: Low
[Next There are 6 enable buttons and only grass is enabled]
Background Loading : Off
Particles: Medium

Also:

Screen Res: 1024x768
Aspect Ratio 4:3
Fullscreen off.

Thanks. Rechs.

If it's the shader cache it should stop to 'lag' after some time while you are on the map (without moving) and not lag again the next time you enter the map under similar conditions.
.....also a saddle that won't pinch the tail. One day!

Hmm . Then it must not be shader lag, because it didn't stop lagging.

Got a quick Q, does this happen to everyone?: whenever I leave the game by pressing the in-game exit button, I get the "planeshift closed unexpectedly" report thing, and it says my client is out of date, upgrade to 0.5.3. But I have 5.4. ...

it's a common issue we're working on, so yeah - almost everyone

Edit: I updated my drivers and it appears to be a lot less freezing now, still leave comments if you have ideas. Thanks.  \\o//

Original Message:
Hmm when I went to absolute lowest settings and lowest res (320xsomething) I got an error saying -

Default shader /shader/std_lighting.xml
not available

Where can I get this, should I reinstall?
I tried to repair but it didn't download the file. It found other ones, but no shaders.

By the way.... I still have the freezing in lowest settings & res, it's not lag , like the game isn't that slow, it just freezes... and I have like 5 mbps internet which should be fast enough. Also, it happens on both servers.

The Nvidia GeForce 6150SE is such a low-end graphic solution, it is not at all "gaming hardware" (even slower than the 6200 in my avoid list). Furthermore, it seems to eat off your conventional RAM, does not have own video memory - the rest left over is already not generous anymore. Also your processor is only a single-core. So you won't be able to avoid slowdowns now and then.

About the missing shader XML file ... I don't have "std_lighting.xml" either.

And I have freezes too - on a QuadCore with 4 GB RAM and an Nvidia GeForce 9600. Mainly when I enter an area behind a corner where a lot of NPCs with all their traits have to be loaded. And I even have background loading enabled... - One of the worst areas is the "East Passage" in Hydlaa, when you come from the plaza, pass it loading the east map, and run from the passage to the crossroad: Then the game can even crash while trying to load all the NPCs with their clothes and items.

Oops it's actually a 6150 LE not SE but whatever.
Yeah I guess I'll have to deal with the lag.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
