The Extraordinary Society of Reputable Scientists and Philosophers

History.

After several vain efforts of scientists and philosophers to settle the essential question on whether the Kikiri is an incarnation of Laanx or merely an Ulbernaut in disguise, having ruled out all other possibilities through means of infallible logic during an evening in a tavern, they decided to found a society dedicated to studying and finding answers to fundamental problems in nature such as the Kikiri paradox. Being the brightest minds in Yliakum, they chose a collection of fancy words to represent their wisdom on paper and named the society accordingly, thus the Extraordinary Society of Reputable Scientists and Philosophers was born.

Rules.

Members of the Extraordinary Society of Reputable Scientists and Philosophers must partake in at least one philosophical discourse per year. Failing to have at least one such discourse has unimaginable consequences.

Members of the Extraordinary Society of Reputable Scientists and Philosophers must always refer to the Extraordinary Society of Reputable Scientists and Philosophers in its full name to emphasize on the importance of the Extraordinary Society of Reputable Scientists and Philosophers. Abbreviation is punished by exclusion.

Members of the Extraordinary Society of Reputable Scientists and Philosophers are bright minds and important people and must thus be addressed as "Intellectual" followed by the full name to represent their supremacy to ordinary citizens at all times. Offenders are punished by being addressed as "Nonintellectual" for the period of one week.

Members of the Extraordinary Society of Reputable Scientists and Philosophers are always right when engaged in a discussion with ordinary citizens, as members of the Extraordinary Society of Reputable Scientists and Philosophers have a profound understanding of philosophical problems.

Members of the Extraordinary Society of Reputable Scientists and Philosophers that have not yet published two thousand scientific essays are required to clean their shoes with diamond-shaped pink wax at least twice a day. Asking about aforementioned wax or failing to clean ones shoes properly requires the offender to buy a round of drinks in a tavern for all members of the Extraordinary Society of Reputable Scientists and Philosophers present.

Application.

Due to the inherent exclusivity of the Extraordinary Society of Reputable Scientists and Philosophers, applicants are required to hand in either a complete, written rebuttal of an existing idea or a written thesis on a fundamentally new idea . After handing in their work, applicants will be examined for thorough knowledge of the current scientific achievements and philosophical concepts.
Since the evaluation process requires too many intellectual resources, applicants that, instead of said documents, submit a keg of ale, to be used for strictly scientific purposes, to the Extraordinary Society of Reputable Scientists and Philosophers are accepted without further examination.

Proceedings.

The Extraordinary Society of Reputable Scientists and Philosophers will hold at least one official assembly every week in order to discuss current philosophical issues.
Furthermore, continuous studies of the material and immaterial world are to be conducted, the results will be presented to the weekly assembly. Guests are invited to partake in these studies, especially in experiments risking the lives of the experimenters.
A monthly journal is to be published in order to present the profound and utterly important findings of the Extraordinary Society of Reputable Scientists and Philosophers to the public.

[OOC information]
In my eyes, PlaneShift currently lacks pseudo science IC wise. Almost everyone can publish a paper on some matter, yet barely anyone does that. Curious inhabitants of a world such as Yliakum would ask themselves on why the sun shines or why things drop on a frequent basis or suggest alternative forms of government. I find this aspect lacking, and I hope to change this through the creation of this organisation. Most importantly, members can have fun both IC and OOC discussing utterly weird subjects.

An extraordinary assembly, open to the public, has been scheduled for tomorrow [Friday, 6th of August, 20:00 GMT] in the Temple of Laanx. Guests may apply for membership. Topics to be discussed will be the structure of the Extraordinary Society of Reputable Scientists and Philosophers, which includes the assignment of gravely important positions such as the office of the head of four-eyed tree monster population statistics bureau. Furthermore, the newest findings on gravity will be presented to the audience, a public discussion of the subject is scheduled afterwards. Drinks will be provided.

I am truly shocked, impressed and amazed. This is the kind of creative stuff I've been whining about being lacking in game. Won't do me much good now that I'm not playing anymore but I wish you the best.

@ Maisent:

You did not read the rules? ... If you did, you would have noticed that having such a long and complicated name seems to be the only purpose of this organisation... ;)

@ Blueprints:

Which is the reason why the Knowledge Seekers will probably not be very keen to become members. It is more important to teach content than a name. ;)

@ Illysia:

Do you also like the "Medical Association" project? - Once Amdeneir is "finished", their hospital will need staff...

But yes - having "proud intellectuals" will be a funny exception to the usual, boring world of guildwars, epic-being and "Insatiable Avarice"* in PS.

Maisent, I can assure you that the name will not be that long in game. That'd be ludicrous. The in game name will be "Flying Penguins Guild".

I'm glad something like this is being established. With many bad happenings as of late along with some of the illnesses that were going around in game years ago, there should be an organization of scientists, philosophers, and thinkers of that sort. Every world in every game should have people that are trying to progress society whether that be philosophical thinkers, or innovative folks.

Quick! Gather all the Lemur A.S.A.P.  :P

The medical association would in fact be good. My only concern is the usual problem.... finding enough players willing to take a break from being either the hero or vigilante. Somebody has to play the professional... aside from LigH ;) , to join these organizations. I only foresee trouble in getting this off the ground as it looks like it might involve a lot of conversational RP and as we all know... that is soooooooo boring! ::) /sacarsm

If you can make this work, you have my utmost respect.

Whats this ?

You mean all that .. that .. typing crapola?    :o

All that "me talks to you instead of playing the goddamn game" jibber-jabber?  :@#\

No, no, no ! We just won't have all that .. that .. that .. stupid typing stuff going on here.

Hasn't anyone told you that text based games are like so 80's ?
Thats like 30 years ago? Hello?  is 2010 now?

What the hell do you think this is ? Zork ?   X-/

Oh gawd! My eyes .. they're b l e e d i n g  at the thought of reading all those stupid words.

Focussing on chat and conversations is for people who dont know how to do it right, the staff already stated that: Theres IRC for such, hence: FAIL! :P

But on a serious note, great approach there! You made up this thread making your idea look cool and intruiging, and I think it has a good potential to attract witty, creative and unconventional people. My only concern would be, as Illysia already mentioned, to either find this type of people within the player community at the moment, and even if so, to still have some players left adequate and willed to engage in more sophisticated plays than the most standard "We help newcomers", cops and robbers, protectors of the good, you name it.
Good luck!

Still though I have a question:
Any ideas on how (or will) to structure that guild, regarding ranks? Like fancy derivatives of Professor, Postgraduate, Student, Mentor, Tutor or whatever?
Perhaps such could make that grouping appear more compact and coherent?

This is not a guild. This is a society, a club. Everyone can join, regardless of occupation and guild. Everyone is equal, except some people have certain tasks to fulfill, for example the treasurer or the recorder.

LOL I love the way you represent this your venture. Especially since here it more or less subtly fits the mentioning of Kaerli.

So you dont intend to have guild mechanics involved? Perhaps you want to include this in your OOC remarks?
But then again.. it shouldnt matter.
Nothing more to add, keep it going!
