check /etc/alsoftrc and ~/.alsoftrc and locate a line "drivers=..."
make sure that drivers is set to the sound driver you actually use (e.g. alsa, pulseaudio, ...)
I'm not sure what it defaults to, but it appears it's set to the wrong value (e.g. you use pulseaudio, but it's set to alsa)

Hi Olurtz  :)

Are you still having problems with Linux Mint 9 and PlaneShift?

If so, I am currently trying different ways of installing PlaneShift to try to work out what is the easiest way on Mint 9.

I have tried two different ways so far, both of which worked but the first one was an absolute pain (don't install it as root), the second one works ok, but requires a little bit of tweaking to get the desktop icons to work correctly, at the moment I would say that this will be the best way but I have two other methods to try before I make a decision.

I think all the errors you were getting were not necessarily related to sound as I have sound ok on both my attempts so far, Mint 9 defaults to using PulseAudio and it sets its output to stereo, PlaneShift seems to pick up on that so it seems to work ok.

If anyone wants to know how to enable Surround Sound in Mint 7, 8 or 9, I can post a solution for that as well.

I will post back shortly with my results.

it depends edjon.

openalsoft is linked statically into planeshift, hence it's using the defaults it's been built with.
if the configuration file is absent (as it appears to be the case), it falls back to the default which appears to be pulseaudio which may not be available or configured properly.

Olurtz: if the file is absent, check the sample for how it may look like and create a new one accodingly :)

Im not quite sure, but deactivating sound in pslaunch might be a quick workaround to get the game running at all?
.....also a saddle that won't pinch the tail. One day!

Hi RlyDontKnow :)

I don't think for a moment that you are wrong, I was just commenting on what my own experiences are with Mint 9 and PlaneShift installation from scratch I have tried various different ways of installing it and I think I may have an idea of where things can go wrong and produce loads of non-related errors.

Some  of the things I picked up on, were the references to Crystal Space, as regards if any other instances are running on the machine I don't have CrystalSpace so I got no errors in that respect, if there are 2 instances of CrystalSpace running they will try to use the same resources and so, basically lock each other up, so that alone could account for the CrystalSpace errors of which there are a lot in Olurtz's post
.
@sen

Hi all :)

Ok finally I have a solution,

I have put together a detailed guide on how to install PlaneShift under Mint 9 "Isadora" I have included code snippets for the first parts and screenshots for the actual installation procedure at the moment my screenshots exceed the maximum permissible limits for attachments in  posts, so I need to talk to the moderators about a possible solution to this, it might be a case of rather than attaching them to the post I may be able to link all of the images from my webspace, so please bear with me.

I also think that this should be in a separate thread in which case I will include a link here, for now it is up to the moderators, if necessary, I will make the whole thing available at my website, but to be honest it would be better to post it here on the PlaneShift forums so as a forum search can find the post.

So far I have tried six possible ways of installing PlaneShift and have finally settled on what I think the easiest way for new Linux users that have chosen Linux Mint 9 or derivatives as a first try.

Theoretically this should also work on older Linux Mint installations, Ubuntu installations and by extension (with a bit of tweaking)  Debian installations.

I will get the post up there as soon as possible

edit...  test for importing images

aha, It seems that they would prefer all images to be imported rather than stored on their servers, which makes sense, so for this guide I will start a new thread and link all of the images in from my site.

@Moderators please could you let me know if this is ok for me to do it this way.

edit.. I have posted the installation instructions at the following link http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=37975.0

I hope this is helpful :)

Jon.
