Installation on Linux Mint 9 "Isadora"

I have constructed this post in an effort to be as simple as possible for new Linux users, after all, we were all new once :) lol I still am.
So for the ppl that know and understand Linux, please don't take offence (or even a gate for that matter ;) )

Step 1. [Download]

I Downloaded PlaneShift from http://laanx.fragnetics.com/bt/PlaneShift-v0.5.4-x86.bin.torrent Using Bit Transmission which is shipped with Mint 9, It downloads really quickly so I would definitely recommend the .torrent version

I downloaded the x86 version (I run a 32-bit system) however if in doubt use the x86 32-bit version anyway, most 64-bit systems have a 32-bit operational mode built-in so it should work with the least problems.

The default download location should be,
Code: [Select]
/home/your-username/Downloads/
Fire up the terminal (please keep it open during the entire installation if possible), and navigate to the download location using the command,
Code: [Select]
cd Downloads
if you are in your normal user directory/folder which is the default start-point for terminal, otherwise use,
Code: [Select]
cd ~/
to get you to the highest level in your user directory/folder and then,
Code: [Select]
cd Downloads
to get to the same point, Linux is case-sensitive so remember the capital "D" for Downloads (I keep forgetting myself).

Step 2. [Enable Installer]

You should now be in your Downloads directory/folder.

Next job is to make the file executable, (as it stands the file won't do much), in order to do that, type the following command into terminal,
Code: [Select]
chmod +x PlaneShift-v0.5.4-x86.bin
Congratulations! and pat yourself on the back for a job well done :) you now have a working installation file.

You are still in your Downloads directory/folder so just type the following command into terminal,
Code: [Select]
./PlaneShift-v0.5.4-x86.bin
The PlaneShift installer should now start.

Step 3. [Install Game]

The first screen you will see is the language selector.

In my case I selected English, Click Ok.

You are then greeted with the initial setup screen

Click Forward.

Read through and accept the license agreement.

Now this is the point at which things change slightly for Mint 9, the next screen you see will give you a suggested installation directory/folder which is /opt.

If you try to install there it will tell you that you need to be logged in as root to use that directory/folder. Please do not try to run the installer using sudo because this will then install PlaneShift with root as the owner of the program which can cause horrendous permission problems with the installation (I know, I tried :( ), instead, click the little folder icon to the right of the selection box to open up the file manager.

And then click on the Home button upper-left, this will take you to your username directory/folder.

At the bottom of the selection screen you will notice that the suggested directory/folder is still opt (you can change it here if you wish, or in the next step) it is highlighted in green in the screenshot, I chose to go with that which means that the game will be installed to /home/your-username/opt it will also create a sub-directory/folder in there called PlaneShift so the game plus all of its support files will be installed to /home/your-username/opt/PlaneShift you can also specify a different path like say /home/your-username/games/rpg if you wish, (if you didn't change it in the previous step).

The next screen will confirm your selection (in my case I stuck to home/my-username/opt) it was easier for the purposes of this guide :).

Click Forward.

Next we come to the system requirements needed to run the game.

Have a read through these to make sure your system is able to run PlaneShift (The requirements are designed in such a way as to make PlaneShift work with most systems so I personally wouldn't worry to much) it will run on very basic systems by todays standards which is great for people that may have Laptops running Linux, as it should run on those without difficulty unlike a few other games I could mention ;) Ok enough of my rambling :), next comes another decision we have to make.

Click Forward.

Here you are given the option of a system-wide installation or not, I chose No although I did try yes initially but it seemed to make no difference (probably because I was not installing the game as root).

Now, we have yet another decision to make, but this one is easy, select the window manager you are using.

You have the options of KDE, Gnome or Other, in my case I chose Gnome, lol this is getting a bit involved but please bear with me, we will get there I promise, ok the next part is to decide whether to install menu icons

This doesn't seem to work with this setup, so either yes or no will do.

Now we get to make another decision.

Do you want to install desktop shortcuts, well, as the menu icon install didn't seem to work I chose Yes.

Ok now we get to the dreaded permissions setup, this is the thing that most former MS Windows users worry about.

As regards this I chose no, because, going back to the initial setup earlier, we defined the installation directory/folder in our user-space, that made us the owner of the file, and that enables us to have full control. This means that you don't need to set any kinds of permissons on the game Directory/Folder, additionally you can add other users to the Games group and they will also be able to play PlaneShift (as I understand it). Select No. Click Forward.

Ok, finally we get to the good part.

Yay! we finally get to install the game, although, to be fair we have laid the ground-work for a safe installation in all of the previous steps.

Click Forward.

Now we have the installation confirmation screen.

This can take a few minutes so please be patient, after it has finished you will see a confirmation of the installation.

Now we have a few things to consider, after the installation is complete you will find two desktop icons.

As they stand they won't do much, if you double-click on them you will get a message stating that the icons are not trusted so we need to get them to work, right-click on each icon in turn and select properties and then the permissions tab.

Near the bottom you will see the option in the execute section to allow the icon to "allow executing the file as program!", select that.

You will now find that the appearance of the desktop icons have changed.

You have now fully installed the game, all you need to do, is to double-click on (in this case) the PlaneShift icon, the game will now run, in my case, at the time of this post, there was an update available, so I included the next screenshots to show how this looks.

I obviously selected Yes and the updates commenced.

So now, things are updating.

Finally the update finished (took about 10 minutes) and we now end up here.

Enjoy!! :)

I have tried to make this post as detailed as possible, specifically for new adventurers into Linux, that have changed from Windows, or are merely curious, for the seasoned Linux/UNIX users, I appreciate that you may already know all this stuff, but for the new users, (as I still am) I hope that this helps to go towards alleviating any problems that former Windows users may experience :)

To the Moderators please feel free to let me know if I have breached any agreements by posting this here and linking the images in from my site, if this is ok please feel free to sticky this post if you think it warrants it :).

I would also like to add that this is not the only way to install PlaneShift, however this was the solution that worked for me and as far as I can tell it should not cause any other problems within your installation, I deliberately stayed away from installing it as root to encourage people to use their own user-space, it is never a good idea to continuously run Mint 9 as root if you don't need to :)
