Size customizations
« on: September 13, 2010, 04:59:30 pm »
First, I'd like to apologize for hitting this forum twice in a row, but I had two ideas in a row...

I was thinking... some of the windows are too big, and I know I'd like to be able to shrink them a little, or perhaps set them to a simpler mode that doesn't take up as much space (spell windows ;) ).

I also know that the text size is bigger than some of us need it to be, and if we could select between different font sizes, that would allow us to better customize our windows as well. That also goes for those of us who have a hard time reading the PS text; a larger font option would be good as well.

The main reason I suggest all this is because it's too easy to get the game screen covered in windows, so if we could customize what we get a little more, it would be possible to minimize the area that gets covered, based on our own preferences.

if you righ-click a window, you'll get a little option dialogue where you may enable/disable font scaling which may help with your font size issues.

also you can resize a few windows to your liking (those with the little triangle on the lower right)

that put aside you may create your own skin as well which has smaller windows. you may check http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?board=61.0 for some pre-made ones or edit the gui yourself (the gui is written in xml and the different windows may be found in data/gui in your main planeshift directory)

Also, having the 'name tags' only one size, instead of small to huge, depending on the distance of the character, would be cleaner. We can already see how far away the character is....

@ RlyDontKnow: many of us don't know how to edit GUIs, or are afraid to mess with the client itself, as in my case. I'd rather not mess with anything... after taking so long to get the client to work at all.

Don't worry about editing the xml files that define the windows. Just keep the original files and put your experimental versions maybe in a skin. Since 0.5.0, you can even rebuild most windows from the files without restarting the client by simpy Ctrl-clicking the windows close window. The syntax may be a bit confusing at first, especially if you want to make a window resizeable that does not support the feature per default, but you will get used to it if you want to. Using mods that already exist may indeed be the simpler solution. Some of them (such as mine...) also put focus on a much more compact window layout suitable for lower resolutions.
