OpenGL error on Win XP SP3.
« on: November 02, 2010, 08:22:41 pm »
Hello, I'm a returning player to Planeshift. I took a long break and during it I upgraded my computer's graphics card and RAM.

My problem is as follows: I get an OpenGL error after I press play stating that I need to upgrade my drivers. I just recently updated them yet I still get the error.

Detailed info about my rig:

- Windows XP Home Edition SP3.
- Procesor Intel Core 2 CPU @ 1,86 GHZ.
- 3 GB RAM.
- Nvidia GeForce GTS 250 video card.

Any help in getting the game to work would be greatly appreciated. Also if you need any additional information I would be more than happy to comply.

I had the error too!

It's on teh same page. No search needed.

Try update your drivers from a legit site. Don't use Driver Detective or bullshit like that, you will mes up your machine. Plus they don't do their job.

Indeed - always get the original from the manufacturer!

http://www.nvidia.com/page/drivers.html -- or your local site. Latest WHQL drivers should be version 260.99 these days.

I see. I did get the update from the official Nvidia site of course, why just this morning I upgraded to 260.99 before installing Planeshift.

Hm, maybe I need to reinstall the game again. Just to be sure. :)

Thanks for the info!

Well, next time you get "an error" ... quote it.

Or do you believe there could be only one possible error message on earth?! ;)

The more exact we know your problem, the more exact we can suggest a solution.

i don't recomend the 260.99 at all, they sorta seem funky, i've read on the nvidia forums and on the 3dguru forums about .89 and .99 drivers, both seem off somehow, and i had instability problems with that driver also, went back to 258.96 and the system seems beter... after awhile of tweaking ofcourse... they seemed to have done something to the system that shouldn't have happend.

i'm also on xp sp3 but here's the differenace, i'm using a geforce 7800gs agp card, still something like this just shouldn't happen.

side note, i had to use driver sweeper after i uninstalled the driver before i installed a new one, maybe that could fix your opengl problem.

Update:

I uninstalled the game, cleaned up my computer, ran a defrag, reinstalled the game. Now I got rid of the OpenGL error, bad news is it still crashes whenever I press play, also I get this error now.

C:\DOCUME~1\MARAUD~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\b237_appcompat.txt

The game just starts and in 1 fraction of a second the screen goes gray, moving me to the desktop and the error send window. Once I press cancel I get the "quit unexpectedly" happy happy joy joy window.

psclient_static is also one of the reasons of the crash alternating between the error up there and these ones:

C:\DOCUME~1\MARAUD~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER433b.dir00\psclient.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\MARAUD~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER433b.dir00\appcompat.txt

Thanks for the info Elvicat, I personally haven't had any problems with my video card up till now.

I wonder, does the game update corectly or did I get the wrong installer?

Thanks.

you doo know that none can actually read those files right?

also if the updater fails to update just hit that repair button when it starts.

well aslong as you didn't take the x64 version you should be fine.

1) Check in the PlaneShift launcher if the Audio option is set to "OpenAL", and maybe re-install an OpenAL driver ("oalinst.exe" from Creative).

2) Delete the file "%APPDATA%\PlaneShift\shadercache" once.

And yes ... check again if you took the 32 bit installer: "PlaneShift-v0.5.4.exe"

Well thanks for all the help guys. :)

Tried all sorts of things to get it to work, reinstalled quite a few times and tried all that stuff with the delete file and repair/update OpenAL.
Also changed the options in the launcher everytime I pressed play.

It still crashes. I hope that in future releases I will be able to get back to this gem of a game, I love it. Darn you computer!

Thanks again and good luck. :)

Update: I'll also continue playing around with the settings and check the forums when I have some free time, maybe the solution will present itself here or I'll have a stroke of luck and manage to make it work. :)
