your character resides on the server, so don't worry. Unless you've caused a remote server shutdown while tampering your system...  :)
by the way, what operating system are you talking about?

PS: in Windows XP I read my logs without problems while playing.

I can/have read my logs while playing, using both XP and Windows 7.
You maybe roleplaying but you could still be OOC.

Vista can access the chatlogs just fine while PS is running. Just get a decent text editor which does not mind the file changing while being displayed.  ;)

Although on the subject of chat logs, I do think for windows it should be placed not in C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\PlaneShift but under C:\Program Files\PlaneShift

As application data is a hidden document, and non administrator users can't access it, I think.

wrong. go to msdn and learn.
NOTHING should be written in the program files folder except the application files: that's why some old games like mass effect fail to work without administrator rights.
Config files must be stored either in the registry or app data folders which is Application Data. It's an user based folder so it's accessible by the current user and the administrators. Documents could be acceptable too but it's not standard.

Hmmm true, but then I suppose since logs are one of the most popular things in app data along with screenshots, is it possible to use your own program in PS launch to open such folders?

hum what do you mean? i think the best would be if that folder was added to the start menu. The problem is changing the installer config files

Well yes, but I have had many new players asking how to get to their logs, and it is very difficult to explain in text how to find it.

So yes any other folder that is not hidden would be a good idea

It is not Planeshifts fault that windows "hides" application data per default.

For the "explanation in text", I think it is a very good thing that we have that clearly stated in the "files and folders" section at the top of the help window. The difficult part is maybe to explain what a home directory is to someone who has never heard of that.

Well then PlaneShift is going to have to work it's self around the issue. You can't just sit there and say "oh it's there fault not ours, nah we're not going to fix the problem" If you're gonna be like that (pointing the finger at something else) Planeshift has no future. Again another opinion stop getting all anti about it.

Position of chat log files in PlaneShift, was Re: Chat logs

Since I choose to be part of PlaneShift, I'll do the best I can to help.

So, I would like here to make a resuming and hopefully clear post regarding the topic

Position of chat log files in PlaneShift

because is a recurring question, repeated over and over.

Where are the logs of my characters?

Chat logs are in form of a (really huge after a while) text file, whose name is <first name>_<last name>_chat.txt .
The position varies by design and operating system.

in Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7:

click on start menu > run..
then type:

Code: [Select]
%appdata%/PlaneShift/logs

in Linux:
type in a terminal:

Code: [Select]
cd /home/<whathever.is.your.login.aka.username>/.PlaneShift/logs/

in OS X:

Code: [Select]
cd ~/Library/Application Support/PlaneShift/logs/
anyway you can use your preferred operating system search utility, searching for *_chat.txt, making sure of including hidden files.
