PSClient.exe stopped working; I'm New NOT tech savy
« on: November 10, 2010, 07:09:52 pm »
OK, I've updated my driver, checking for updates with directx. I've looked around a lot on this forum so I don't bother someone with my "foolish" questions.

First of all, where exactly (please spell out for someone who has NO idea what all the programming jargon means) do I go to update PlaneShift. I thought I should be OK since I only downloaded it about 3 days ago, but when I look for a place that says "Update" I have not been able to find this as of yet...

Secondly, when I "join" the game, having only just come from the training/tutorial area, my character can only walk for a short ways before the game freezes and a small window opens on my screen saying something like "psclient.exe has stopped working". If I then reload the game and start again, the same thing happens, over and over and over again.

Finally, I have looked into my system, hoping that I have found any and all information which will satisfy your needs so that you can answer my question without a lot of extra "coaching the fool who doesn't have the tech-knowledge". Below you will see the stats on My laptop and I do hope that someone here will be helpful and even polite.

Thank you, truly. I live in a remote area, taking care of an elderly woman 7 days/week and I would love to have "somewhere" to escape!

for updating: if you launch the game via the start menu entry created by the installer, you start it via the launcher which will notify you if there are updates available :)

as for the crash: it may be related to your gfx card (intel 4 series) which is 1) below minimum requirement which doesn't have to be an issue, but means unsupported and 2) is known to have many driver issues.

your best bet to resolve the crashing issue is to join us on irc (see http://www.planeshift.it/irc.html), you'll be guided there :)

Thank you so much! I thought that my system met the minimum requirements, but alas, I truly know far less about that end of things than I'd like.

Also...is it possible for me to do anything to upgrade this gfx card (Intel 4 series) of which you spoke?

Thanks for the link too, I'll see if I can find my way into the game somehow! ::|

It is very improbable to exchange a graphic card in a laptop. They are quite integrated in the whole laptop design ... often even not a separate card, but just an area on the mainboard - then an exchange is close to impossible (adding a separate graphic card to a desktop PC is much easier, but laptop mainboards may not even provide any upgrade socket for graphic cards).

Still, there are a few points from the software-side you can try to make the game work a little more stable. Try to set up the graphic details in the PlaneShift launcher to rather low options. Delete the "shadercache" file in your user account's "Application data" area once (enter "%APPDATA%\PlaneShift" in your Windows Explorer address line or in the "Run..." dialog of the Start menu); the next game start will take much more time, but might get rid of differences between old cached data and new content which might have been a possible cause of crashes.

If you are uncertain if you will manage that ... well, this game is about getting relationships to other people, so how about starting in real life to make contact to "your local nerd". ;)

wrong: http://forum.notebookreview.com/gaming-software-graphics-cards/418851-diy-vidock-experiences.html#post5324240
then some laptop have mxm but if he has an intel the possibility are almost zero except if the same model has other versions with discrete cardshttp://forum.notebookreview.com/gaming-software-graphics-cards/418851-diy-vidock-experiences.html#post5324240 but even then i've never heard of toshiba among them. can always try: http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/

would be easier to get a beter laptop or a high end desktop.
if anyone expects to play games on their laptop make sure not to take a laptop with intel, s3 or via graphics cards, sure these are alot cheaper but not worth it, they only work as buisness computers mostly.

I must thank you all again for your responses to my plight.

Yes, this is a cheap laptop and I never intended it for gaming...but now I have been sucked into RP and do not currently wish to spend my hard earned cash on a higher end laptop. ::|

However, I have a friend with a desktop model that is older, but may have what it takes to run the games I desire. I'm coaxing him to bring it to me a.s.a.p. and perhaps that will solve my dilemma. If not, I could hope for Santa to be extra nice  :P

And, as for local nerds, I have at least three of them trying to find some way for me to run an older RPG on this already and I must say, they are not looking hopeful.

So, I'm crashing every two minutes today and after having such a nice experience last night, getting involved in an unexpected attack, meeting other players and having some fun with RP...as I said. I will persevere ;)

Thank you all! \\o//
