Help us to find the next PS developers!
« on: November 16, 2010, 04:52:13 pm »
[News taken from main site]

Some updates!   :)

We are working on the next release, which will make the client more stable and will add some new interesting elements to the game. New areas, some improvements to the user interface, more animations and better game progression through the faction and quest systems.

:detective: To make all the above possible (in a reasonable timeframe!) and for the future expansions we need your help in finding new PS developers and contributors, and we decided to launch a new recruitment campaign where everyone can help!

We ask you to download one of the flyers below, print it, go to your university/school/office and stick it in the public board. Yes, physically! As an alternative, if there is an electronic place to share such kind of messages within the university/school/office you can use the electronic file.

We will be very grateful if you can let us know where/when you posted it, so we can track the progress of this initiative. For this purpose you can use this forum thread.

Flyer for artists, to be used in any art school/course: Color, black and white.

Flyer for programmers, to be used in any computer science school/course: Color, black and white.

Flyer for writers, to be used in any literature/art school/course: Color, black and white.

Thanks! We want to see a greater and better PlaneShift!

Having designed plenty of college billboard flyers before... these could stand a little improvement, tbh.   :whistling:   Too much text, awkward grammar, address not prominent enough, etc. etc.

And is that "500.000 registered players" meant to convey 500 or 500,000?  If it's just 500, ditch the decimal.  If you're claiming 500,000, then even if it's technically true you're going to get people logging on and saying "... Where are all the people?"

Well, i have'nt been on the site since V 4.03 of PS, but back then when the server went down all the time, I would check the website, for the server, and it had a little part in the corner saying there were around 20,000 accounts or so

I do believe that saying 500.000 like that is jus5 a more European way of doing things.

I'm glad other people saw fit to point out what I was thinking... ;D But two things...

 1. what happened to the old flyers? I remember one from before and it was actually nicer.
 2. what happened to the people from that game design class that used to have people posting all over the place looking for where to get info on what they were supposed to be working on?

mmmmmh yes I agree with you, the poster isn't very attractive, I could probably come up with a far better one.

I do wonder, why isn't there oe for players to join?
You maybe roleplaying but you could still be OOC.

Well, I could volunteer in terms of developing a coherent judicial and legal system in game. The courts practice and judicial reasoning here could see better days. :-p

It is a common notion that there are two types of people in this world, one who creates, and one who follows and criticizes.

Then again, when the latter is justified I cannot help but to be enticed to ask a few questions.

Talad,

- Is a "strong focus on roleplay" really envisioned for the future of Planeshift?

- When on the topic of roleplay. How would you personally define it, do you enjoy it?

- Does Planeshift really need public settings, as in at least a background for each race at all?

- How is it to work within the team, is it a pleasant, learning experience?

- What direction is the game going in from an administrator standpoint?

A fair point.  I wonder if it would be possible to get versions that just said "500"?   My American eyes see five zeros and I automatically assume 500,000.

Well, if it's meant to be a RP focused game, then yes.  It strains credulity to say everyone except the Lemurs and the Kran have forgotten their origins, when Yliakum hasn't been inhabited for even a full thousand years yet.   Knowing the backgrounds would be helpful for figuring out what the cultures are supposed to be like.

Americans always liked to do things backwards (the nomenclature was created first by Europeans after all)  Americans use a comma (,) to denote the thousands place, while they use a dot (.) to represent the zeros place.  Almost the entire rest of the world uses dots (.) for denoting thousand places, and a comma (,) for the zero place.

anyone who has gone through some chemistry or physics, or upper level math courses will simply read this as five hundred thousand regardless of where they are from.  As the posters are designed for people in college (people who are 18+), and if you are a studying to be a developer, you have had those higher level academics courses, these people will know of the differences in notation and will read the number correctly.

As such, I don't see the need to really worry about it. But on the other hand, I think it would have been nice to have a few different copies created that use both ways of denoting it so people could have used whichever version they wanted.

Having gone through a fair bit of upper level math, I'm gonna have to say I've always seen the numbers adjusted for the American nomenclature.  But my experience is probably in the minority, so, no biggie.

Edited to add: it is impressively stupid that I misinterpreted what Dracaeon meant, though.  Um - it's early in the morning here and my brain is only at 50% functionality apparently?  :-[

Regardless, that's besides the point: so the posters are indeed saying five hundred thousand player accounts?  Even if that's technically true, only a small sliver of those accounts are actually being used.  I have a feeling these posters might foster a slightly unrealistic expectation in possible recruits.

Take a look at the guilds page on the main website... it's part of a long standing tradition. Fudging statements with misleading info and throwing out unqualified numbers are considered perfectly acceptable behavior for luring people to PS, and that might explain why the new recruitment drive is needed... after all, if you manage to get in, you are eventually bound to stumble across the the parts that weren't explicitly stated. Unfortunately, reality getting a jump on you when it was completely unnecessary is rather discouraging and contributes to people burning out faster than necessary.

wow are there really 500k accounts created? Although that doesn't mean 500k people nesessarily... anyway,  i will definintely let people in my school know of this. Personally i have already offered to help with modeling in any way i can (info@planeshift.it  is a valid e-mail to ask helping with PS, isn't it?) I tried Talad's address on PS site about a month ago but i got a message my mail was never delivered
