Why do you play?
« on: November 23, 2010, 07:37:30 pm »
Guessing I already know what the most popular answer will be, if most of you vote honestly, but, let's find out.

I'm interested in learning how much the channels and alliance and other ooc chat tabs effect RP. I have a suspicion more "players" are here to chat than RP, or seem to get more enjoyment from it than from the game itself. If that turns out to be true, then it's an indication that RP might be becoming less popular, even here on the RP server. If there were no ooc chat, other than RP related, would players actually spend more time playing than chatting, or would even more players leave the game because it's not fun enough to only RP?

Personally, I prefer to stay out of ooc chat tabs because I love RP to the extent that I attempt to fully immerse myself into the settings and my character's situations. When I do look, the silliness I normally see going on there takes away my concentration and immersion in the game, although, I do once in a while find it a welcome diversion while training skills.

Why am I here?
Exploring emotional situations and interpersonal relationships is what I enjoy most from RP as I'm sure many who know me already realize. As I've experienced with some other players, this kind of immersive RP can literally lead to bringing a tear to your eye or heartfelt laughter and many other emotions in probably much the same way a film scene can cause an emotional reaction or an actor might work up emotion to portray their role convincingly.

Well, that explains what I love about this game and why I'm here. Am I one of a few? Now, what about you?
I'm so curious!

RP is the primary draw to me.  There are games with much better mechanics, and if I want to while away time with chat, well, that's why I have AIM, Facebook, and a cellphone.  There's something extremely intellectually and emotionally satisfying about good RP, and I'm willing to tolerate the (many!) things I don't like about PS because there are a lot of good RPers on my buddy list.

I wont say I don't chat here, but I "chat" with friends at the club in RL aswell. I don't go to the club to chat as my first reason though.

Infact I often am really slow in guild or alliancechat becuase when I'm roleplaying that has priority.

Interesting thread Dannae!

Personally, my reasons for being here are for multiple voting choices; and perhaps for other reasons not listed.

First with the voting reasons....

RP

The immersive nature PS RP was my first hook. Over time, this was lost to me somewhat; mostly due to the ooc chat tabs. The /away command worked to keep ooc tells away for the time leading up to joining a guild. Once in a guild; and one that supports very strongly RP; it was like swimming against the tide.

To be fair the ooc chat tabs have many pluses to them. It is not my intention to suggest that they should be removed. My suggestion mostly concerned the ability of a user to be able to turn them totally off; and not left dripping like a leaking tap.

PL

My background is based heavily in rpg; so character development and role development are not seen to be in conflict. In my own head, at least, the PLing is done IC as much a possible and will be readily put on hold should RP happen my way.

Dueling/Fight RP

Hardware restrictions offer me a disadvantage to Duelling; however my rpg background was no doubt driven by my love of dice. Without rpg you would probably find me these days sipping on a drink while hanging on a craps table in Vegas.

Even with the hardware limitations, my character has been involved in three or four PvPs and a number of friendly duelling practises.

My preferred mode of RP combat is to use a simple 1d6 approach.

Work ins under way in the The Cooperative Plot Creation Project to offer a modified combat results which takes into account the armour, weapon, strength, ability and luck of the respective characters.

OOC Chat

Gritting my teeth, the OOC Chats have come to be seen as a wide funnel that brings many styles, preferences, conceptions. teachings and players to a meeting point in game under the best scenario. In my opinion a real OPT OUT is needed in the player's client configuration. That way the OOC Chats can bring all the positives that it does to the game without affecting those who seek total immersion.

To sit on someone's head

My rule of thumb has been to keep things PG13.  :innocent:

I don't actually play the game anymore, but I do still troll the forums for it.

My play has slowed a bit due to hobby time also going towards working on The Cooperative Plot Creation Project; yet it would still fall into a active category. This still leaves time to troll the forums; so they are not mutually exclusive.  ;)

Obviously there is no way to express the thoughts of this posting to a simple one choice vote.

i'm here for rp, but that doesn't mean i won't play the game. i have to level up to match my character. and i like the ooc chat, because it's opt-in, and it can be helpful when you need to find rp (or spoilers!), and it's entertaining when you're bored.

also, i think roleplaying is for nerds, so it's saying a lot that i keep playing this game! my favorite part of rp are the adventures and teh lols.  :D

It is not totally opt-in, Sarras, and won't be until it stops filling up your logs.

Many guilds allow OOC chat in guild and alliance channels.

To RP of course. Why else would I even step a character foot in Planeshift?

Hmmm, so far looks like my guess was completely wrong according to the poll results so far.  :-[

I know most of us are here for many reasons..too many to include in a poll, I'd just hoped to find the most important one if you had to pick just one.

Also, I like reading about other's reasons for playing if they care to expand on a poll choice along with a reply.

@ Ruya, I couldn't agree more!

Finally, how did someone else add that last choice to my poll???

that was me.

my question is how did a regular forum user get access to start polls?  as, the only people that should have rights to do that are people like me.  mysteries!

Probably by clicking in General Discussion.

If this forum / user group has wrong permissions, blame the admin?!

Come on, Ruya… you'll miss our OOC chats in Alliance now that Mish is in The Warriors! Recognize it!

Okay, my two circles… (/me is rich, hehe…)

I'm here to RP. Yeah, who could guess? I'm the one chatting OOCly whenever I can, because PLing my needed skills is way tooooo boring when you're alone. If I'm not chatting, I take a break and go find a good RP to distract my mind.

Kisoji taught me to RP according to my skills and stats, and so I did. I maxed my stats (RP stats are somehow lower), I'm training swords and medium armor, mastering Red Way and learning Crystal Way. Mishka is a weapon smith. I'm making her learn axe making, knife making, sword making, blacksmith and metallurgy, because I want her to be one of the best blacksmiths around here. It's all for RP.

Those who have RPed with me know my style: I never over-level (if I can use that word, lol) Mishka. At least, not anymore. For example: Ditem's RP. Ditem is a new character. Mishka could beat him in 0.1 seconds using magic and/or weapons (mechanics-wise). But he's, RPing, a master of Red, Dark, and Azure Way. That pisses me off A LOT. So, someone who didn't spent his time leveling comes and I have to make Mishka /die when he attacks her? I do it for the sake of RP and because now it's too big for me to drop it. But next time I find someone doing that, oh, boy, I'll beat your arse.

I'm not defending mechanics!! Just saying that you can't draw a houseplan if you don't learn first how to draw. Is this understandable? You spend your money studying, buying materials, etc… why can't PS be the same thing? I know, I know… it's a happy world where you have a good time. But I find the same pleasure going on an unplanned raid to hunt ulbernauts or tefusangs, using game mechanics, that I do when I enter the red Crystal Den, buy a liquor, and enjoy a good conversation.

And I picked sitting on someone's head ;D
