Is true RP something that removes the "G" entirely from the RPG experience?

Not at all. That is also part of Lolitra's lagacy. You are a good roleplayer when you try to entertain others as much as yourself and as good as you can. The intention counts.

@Sarva:  :o OK, OK, I admit it.... you outed me! lol, yes, I have been doing a lot of the grinding thing the last several months, way more than anywhere near what I did in the previous 2 years. It wasn't meant to be a secret. I do wonder however, how you know my stats. I suppose that's a gm thing. RPing does tire me out once in a while and I don't mind a respite of mindless training at those times.

Still, even though I much prefer to RP, I don't consider myself an RP snob. For those who prefer other parts of the game better, good for them. We're all here to have fun with what we like best. I've recently become interested in the mechanics of dueling, hence my training more often. I also attribute some of my grinding to the large drop of active players in DOX guild and the game in general.

@gnomebuddy: I totally understand!

TY for sticking up for me Sarras, Despaira and Vakachehk

And about this medieval language stuff, I think it's up to each player to use some imagination. If you want to speak old english, great, but don't expect that from everyone else. Personally, I appreciate some of those who are good at inflecting accents and different speech idiosyncrasies over the use of older dialects. I once saw someone, Stashka I think, be told he shouldn't flip the bird IC to another player because that gesture probably wasn't known in medieval times. But so what! I'm sure there most likely was a gesture with a similar meaning, and it would be silly to look it up and use it in game if no one understands it.

Just want to remind again, my purpose in starting this thread was to get an idea of others favorite thing about playing PS and read your reasons. Of course I never expected the poll results to show a true reading, but thought it would be fun just the same. Also, love reading about how your characters or players themselves have been affected or changed from experiences as a direct result of playing.

Well I think Dannae just summed up what I was trying to say. Pretty much don't go full out Old English but don't go wondering around saying "Hi" or "Yoo Gee" etc  ;)

Well I of course play to RP and play because I love Kore. I did first want to become a blacksmith but then changed to more Fighting and protecting the Enkidukai. I do though some days pick up the old smelting of ore.
You maybe roleplaying but you could still be OOC.

To be honest I have to agree with Sarras on that one about the Old English :p

I really agree with Sarras on a lot of things here. As she's already pointed out, what is being referred to as "Old English" is in fact not.  It's more or less 17th century English, whereas the language known as Old English is closer to 7th century, and is so heavily Germanic and Norse influenced, its unreadable by most English speakers. I'd be surprised if more than a handful of people on this forum could read or speak it.

I think what is more important is that some people attempt to use an archaic speech form to deepen the immersive experience.  That's fine.  It's a great thing, and can make the roleplay a lot of fun.  I admire people like Candy and Roled who can keep up such a dialect flawlessly.  But not everyone is capable of doing that.  There are many different language speakers who play this game, and it is not fair of us as players to be so discriminatory or picky, when some of them are lucky to be able to communicate atall in English, much less go beyond modern English into obsolete vocabulary they would have no chance of learning in their native environments.

And just to agree further with what Dannae and others have said, my main is a fighter.  It wouldn't be very fitting for her to run around with "As intelligent as a stone and frail and feeble in physical combat" in her description, now would it?  Course not. So she trains.  AKA I level her.
Also, it's more credible to others if you grow in power slowly over time.  First kill rats, then noobs, then klyros, and eventually work your way up to more powerful creatures ~ Miomai

I think the vast majority of people who are currently playing ( in the mid to upper 90s I'd say) are what I would call tweeners. They are not pure RP'ers and they are not pure levelers. They are people who RP when the situation calls for it and they also level. I think as the game has changed over time the type of player has changed over time.  Originally when there were fewer skills implemented and smaller maps there was more of the pure RP type player since there was less to do. As more and more skills have been implemented we are seeing more players who have the position that you should back up your RP with your skills. Like Tessra said if you want to play a good fighter then you should have some actual fighting skills. This  means we are seeing fewer of the pure RP type players there use to be more of int he past but I don't think we are seeing very many pure PL'ers coming in either. We are just seeing a changing of the nature of the RP that most people seem to like doing.

I believe roleplay should never be used to replace a game mechanic, only to augment and fill in the gaps. To me, pretending one is X when one hasn't done the work would be like pretending one beat Bowser in Super Mario Bros - not bothering to insert the cartridge, or maybe just playing 1-1, but cheering and high-fiving your buddies at how great you just did trouncing the last boss w/o a scratch. Anything one claims that has a mechanic behind it needs to be earned first. Now, things like background are great for making up your own details. Feel free to have an alcoholic uncle, or descend from aristocracy, or whatever. You're not bypassing actual effort there. This is actually the first videogame I've played where people actually do say, "Well, getting strong would take forever and might be kind of boring, so why don't we just pretend we already did it?"

i think the vast majority of players are aged around 20. i haven't met any "tweens" so far. they aren't patient enough for a game like this. lol

(i'm not sure if i even got what your post meant? sounds like you're talking about teenagers/preteens/whatever and then a cross between roleplayers and powerlevellers)

I though it was clear I was using tweener as in between a RP'er and a PL'er and not talking about player ages at all.

A person aged around 20 is a "twen" (short "e"). The "tweener" sounds like an abbreviation of "in-between-er" instead.

That is my feeling of where the mindset of the active player base is heading as well.

I believe roleplay should never be used to replace a game mechanic...

to me that is semi wrong, I believe that if a game is a 'Roleplay Game' or it's a 'Roleplay Server' then mechanics count as roleplay, so another words, your levels are for roleplay, I don't mind if someone makes some OOC levels for the use of helping new players or what have you...

Or for another perspective if someone locked a door then that door is locked IC and that person instead of saying "/me locks the door to X house" the mechanics do it for them.

Usually if I can, I both lock the door AND type out "/me locks the door". The only case where I might stop typing in order to show what's going on with just mechanics would probably be RPing up to the point where a fight starts and then duelling - and then going back to the RP at the end of the fight. It's a heck of a lot shorter than most strictly-RP fights too.
