description of atheist
« on: November 24, 2010, 05:26:48 am »
im personally a bit offended by the description of atheist in the character creation for planeshift. enough to make a topic in the complaint topic. i am an atheist and the description portrays atheists as selfish lonely people that ignore others opinions and have very ignorant and stupid beliefs. now i dont know how much a physical presence the gods have in planeshift as compared to here. but my point remains.

regardless i still make my characters atheist in character creation.

There have been a thread or two about that thought.

Bottom line seems to be don't confuse PS Settings from Real Life Opinions.

The most important part of a roleplaying game is to tell apart the "real life" world of you, the player, in front of the PC, from the game world of your played character inside the PC, amphitheres.

In the medieval-oriented but fictional fantasy game world of PlaneShift, gods are a fact and do exist. Not believing in their existence would be considered a stupid opinion in Yliakum. For your character. Not for you as player.

Not believing in inevitable fate is something different. That your character may do, even though he should know that gods like Talad, Laanx, Xiosia and Dakkru do exist in Yliakum, and do have might and powers to change this world. But there are opinions that this belief is not meant by the term "atheist", but deserves an own term.

Please don't confuse Yliakum with the real world.
Me, personally, I'm an atheist. But my main char follows Xiosia, and it's not a delusional belief in imaginary higher beings. She and many others have actually seen Xiosia and others gods on occasion (while sober), so not believing in them would be really stupid.

And no, I'm not offended by the ingame description of atheists.
