Agreeing or disagreeing on someone's comment
« on: January 01, 2011, 01:21:40 pm »
Agreeing or Disagreeing (Kind of like the 'like' button on Facebook) on people's comments on these forums. Maybe extended to threads etc.
You maybe roleplaying but you could still be OOC.

I don't think this forums can be edited by adding more features that modify the layout… so I see this wish pretty much impossible. I speak from experience: I've managed forums like this one for about 3 years.

If I'm wrong, someone tell me. And  :offtopic: ?? I think the Wish List is only to rquest features in game.

It would really surprise me that a forum would be employed on an Open Source Project that was not, itself, Open Source. There are a number of GPL forum packages which are written in PHP and interface with MySQL. My guess is that this is such a forum.

Its not much of a secret... And I also think that this is something for the Forum thread.
I doubt that it's a feasible idea, by the way.

I can't see why the wish list is ONLY for IG ideas.

@Mishka I am pretty sure the devs can edit this site, it's not owned by Proboards, or my free forum, I thought, or think it was actually made by the devs and put on an smf server. And my thought was known Talad he wouldn't want anything made by another company or corp, and also Talad has managed to place ads in here but I think he has taken them out.

Anyways the idea isn't important but I thought it was worth a go, because I think the feature works great on Facebook.

Vakachehk, the forums are powered by Simple Machines. This gives a forum package that does everything a normal forum does. Problem is, functionality is limited to whatever is available for Simple Machines.

It has a fair few plugins that can be played with, but I don't think a plugin with the functionality you want is available. I certainly agree with your wish however, would sort of make it easy to see who agrees with who without threads getting ape-long.

SMF is a free PHP and MySQL forum software. Anyone with PHP capability should be able to make bark like a dog. Don't you guys have Google access:)

Sounds like the "Karma System" or several other phpBB mods. However, I think the agreeing and disagreeing is pretty blatant around here anyway - and do we really need every site to copy Facebook? Honestly?

Board software "hacks" like this may or may not already exist for SMF. But...

* LigH dislikes :thumbdown:

Public ratings usually cause even more trolling, envy, slur and flames. Already the public knowledge about postcounts sometimes did in some boards.

Competition often enough seduces to dishonest actions. We are a community. If you don't agree, explain why, in a respectful way.

I like that feedback but it does cross with Chucki's feedback with "threads being ape-long" I think that if you simply agree then you click agree if you got more to say than just "I agree with you" or "Agreed" then they can still comment. But to disagree we could make it more like Facebook in which you can't dislike, you can only unlike. So there is no dislike button only an agree button?

Where have I been, I don't know of any website that's copying Facebook except other social networking sites like Bebo. Most of them are trying to be slow loaders like apple.com  :D

I don't like it. Mainly because we shouldn't care if someone is more usually agreed to than the other. It'd be just another useless information (time joined, post count, deleted posts, threads initiated) with which people make dumb assumptions.
Disclaimer: This is my opinion and I can be reasoned with. I'm probably right, though.

I'm with LigH, Candy and Sangwa, it just adds more stuff. Karma systems are massively abused, and it would be a copy of Facebook functionality. It might be worth it if it would reduce post counts and limit dumb assumptions... but all that is human nature and unlikely to be reduced by such a feature.

when the forums first went to SMF, the karma feature was left on.  It was quickly proven to be pointless and turned off.

rating of posts however, do come with positives.  when set up properly, they allow for those people that are active within the community easier ways to have their helpful replies stick out for others searching the forums.

but proper implementation would require a complete overhaul of the forums; one that will never happen, because there are no active admins with the time and resources to be able to do it.  and also, as it was only agreed upon switching to SMF from the old forums before, it was because we could do so without losing any posts or having to start completely fresh, so that would also have to be met before we updated the place once again.

these forums could be far better than what they currently are.  the code behind this version of SMF is dated, and there are far better packages out there that could be used.  if i were in a position that i was allowed to make such decisions, you would all see far improvement with these forums, but it is not my decision on what code runs the forums or what features get in and what ones don't; I'm simply here to manage them.

that doesn't mean that new features such as this one can't be suggested and debated on however.  the team does listen, and with enough positive feedback, changes do come about.
