Run as admin
« on: February 03, 2011, 10:26:04 pm »
Thought I would try this out, but there's a serious problem with it: The auto-updater requires admin access to my computer.

Not gonna' happen.

There are a thousand games or more out there that don't need admin access on a computer to update.

It shouldn't require admin rights, if you installed it without ones. Obviously if you installed it as admin, you'll need to update as such too.

First could be a wise move to tell us of which operating system are you talking about.  ???
Assuming you have a mac...
You need to move the planeshift folder from inside the dmg file in your applications folder and lauch the updater from there.
Assuming you have a Vista / Windows 7 pc.
try to Run as Administrator by right clicking on PSLauncher.

This problem was discussed in dozens of posts.

Let me guess, Vista?

Vista does that for any updates that you choose to make to the computer [hehe. cancel or allow..] It's just the built-in safeguard of the computer system, not the game itself.  You simply run the game as an admin so that you can personally allow the updater to run.  The game isn't doing anything to your system. ;)
Also, it's more credible to others if you grow in power slowly over time.  First kill rats, then noobs, then klyros, and eventually work your way up to more powerful creatures ~ Miomai

it's probably macosx with the dmg error. the admin message means it lacks write permissions. and you lack those in linux main binary folder (or if installed as admin without changing the permissions after), in windows vista and 7 with a default account when installed in program files (with uac enabled, and without using the disabled "Administrator" account), in previous supported windows if not using the main account (without reconfiguration) and on macosx for system wide installs. Actually applications and games always required admin permissions to install and update except if installed in home folders of the user or if the os had the file protections options misconfigured (eg running always as full admin in xp, or root on linux, wrong permissions setup for critical folders...)
