make 2 dialup modems talk directly
« on: March 22, 2011, 10:02:44 pm »
okay i know this is WAY old tech BUT i'm still curious, i know 1 way of doing what i want a litle bit anyway, use hyperterminal to directly link 2 modems no isp in between, done this with a few hardware modems i got around NOTE doesn't seem to be possible with software modems or as they also are called winmodems.

anyway the 2 modems i've gotten to work right now are 2 external us robotics modems 1 56k and 1 33.6k, shame i don't have another 56 but meh.
in hyperterminal on pc 1 i  type in ATD to call then right after on pc2's terminal ATA to answer and they actually talk to each other via a normal telephone line linking them together NOTE DIRECT no isp, they squeal 'n stuff ;).

anyway... what i'm trying to do is have 1 pc as a gateway to internet via a dialup modem but the "gateway" pc has to have it's modem so it answers right away, no extra running over to it so it answers.

and before someone asks why i'm "poking" with this old tech is cause i'm a litle curious and also becuase i'm trying to get my parrents a taste of internet yes i know modems are slow and there are other ways BUT i live in a house about 100m from theirs and only i have a internet conenction, optic fiber actually, and they only have what's left of a very old telephone line that goes between our houses, i could try a ethernet cable but usualy those usualy can't go over 100m and i bet it's more between the houses also a road in between so adding a new ethernet line is also next to impossible, also a deap ditch is inbetween causing even more problems so now you know, if i could get this to work they atleast could try the net without them hanging over my shoulders every time they want to see something  so if someone has any ideas how to accomplish this 2 modem thing please tell, i used to use modems to access internet over that old telephone line when i was younger and lived in their house and it's still connected into both houses even if it's not connected to a ISP anymore, yes the line is dead no phone signal :P

hope someone has any ideas.

Ah sorry I misread what you were trying to do and thought a cross over cable would do it.

You could try  a wireless router but not sure about range issues.

Yeah, I was going to answer null modem cable as well, but I see what he means.

What about just doing some sort of desktop sharing over the modem connection to a machine on your side with internet?

This might not be what you are searching for but you could make them both call "internet", and then set up a vpn between them.

yes the line is dead no phone signal :P

With the line dead this is likely not possible. Older lines required a very weak electric signal to work. Also the modems would depend on signals coming down the line like RING and such. Instead of ringing the bell of a phone it would pick up. One can set the amount of RING signals they want to wait for before modem pick up so that the phone could be used for both voice and data.

Having a phone line connected is only half of the issue. The other half is a telephone company routing a call to the port through a switch box using telephone numbers. And they usually want to get paid for that service.

If you ever consider laying any cable between the two houses, then a Cat 6 Ethernet wire (S/FTP, S/STP) is possibly the best bet.

If not, I doubt that any Power Line Communication (Ethernet over power supply) will cross the street, so a WLAN Radio Link (Wi-Fi) system is the best alternative suggestions I could offer.

guys i allready said i have made them talk with each other via hyperterminal like this:

pc--modem----modem--pc

as you can see nothing inbetween except a direct link of a old phone cable, as of yet it doesn't even go out of the house and i also tried putty for this and it worked if i tried the serial option, also the modems don't ring each other they just start to talk so i want to bypass the ring stage alltogether as i have no use for it cause of no phone signal around here anymore so vpn isn't possible either as Tux_ suggested.
i suppose without the ring part of the modems they just act as a expensive serial connection heh

Well, so what exactly is your problem now?

Applying the "Internet Connection Sharing" to the modem that is listening to a ring?

hyperterminal or putt doesn't either have auto answer so i can't just set a pc to be the recipient and i havn't gotten a gateway to work yet eitherway.

take a look at this, he talks about some sort of line simulator. it could be a good start point.

yeah i forgot to say i've looked at that but as i don't plan on spending any money on this i really can't build it either and i'm clumsy with a soldering iron :-[
i'm still thinking the direct connection is the way to go but finding a program for this isn't easy at all, maybe i need something like a ras or rras server program i don't know to be honest.
anyway forget about the dialing parts of the modem, they arn't needed as i've said many times, in this way it seems they work as normal serial plugs.

btw this set me on that it could be possible even if it's just pc to pc connection.

so what I am hearing is that the wires between the houses is unpowered but has phone jacks at each end so what you want to do is to hook up null modem cables to each of the computers and plug them into the jacks. and this sounds like what you have already done.

Oh wait, you just need one null modem (crossover) cable not two as they would cancel out at each end? Anyway I guess you'd know if you got it to work once.

So the question I have to ask is once they are connected why turn them off? If you leave them connected you only have to make the handshake once and do not have to worry about it unless it drops. I believe that the modems will attempt to reconnect automatically in that case although you might need to fool around with the modem init strings to get it to go. Your biggest problem is signal attenuation as the distance is sub-optimal to say the least.

That said I'm not sure how you would set up the routing.

maybe I'm just out to lunch.

i'm not even sure a nullmodem cable could be used as the phone line only uses 2 wires if i'm remembering right and you can't use a nullmodem cable with a analog modem, that's a serial only thing.

the biggest problem atm is the programs needed to run this and i highly doubt the pc's would run 24/7 the power isn't that stable around here, sometimes it flickers and dies, fixed that on my side with a ups but only for stuff needing to be up alot and i think i need another one, the one i have is starting to get low on power i think, i'd have to switch the batteries but they cost almost as much as a new one of the same type  X-/
well that's a problem for another time.
