More available ranks in Guilds
« on: March 26, 2011, 04:09:33 am »

It would be very handy if the guild my character belongs to had more ranking slots than it now has. For our purposes only one more is really required; yet perhaps the more the merrier. Others may be able to confirm that or not.

In our case we have developed two paths that guild members can take. One is a spiritual one that will lead to Priest/Priestess and the other is a warrior's path that will lead to A Knighthood rank.

To set this up we have duplicated the permission settings of most ranks giving one spiritual names like Adept, Cleric and Priest and another Rising Templar, Cleric and Templar Knight. Obviously the Cleric rank is used in both paths at the moment due to the fact there are not enough slots to duplicate that rank for the warrior's path.

Hopefully, this would only require a schema change.

I'd like one more rank in KIC too, then we can have a higher Kore Nanol rank.

Kore Nanol is a Kore Citizens rank, which is for everyone who doesn't want to be a protector.
You maybe roleplaying but you could still be OOC.

Heh. We could do well with 3 times the current ranks :P.

The way we've solve it in the the past though, was creating the Imperial Guilds.

With our current guild structure, I think we're actually pretty content with the number of ranks... Despite that, perhaps a Deputy Guild Leader rank would be nice... Especially if he/she also had all of the settings and permissions of the actual Rank 9 (or 10 in this case) Guild leader.  Not a bad idea, Nova, hope it works out okay :)

it's already planned to have more guild leaders and a selectable amount of levels only there are some structural issue which turn also in time restrains.

One remark and one proposal I'd like.

The remark
The term "rank" is a bit of a misnomer. A guild could associate no permissions with rank 8 and all permissions with rank 1, making rank 1 the highest rank in the guild, and it would all work okay.  (Unless I overlooked something, like, PS automatically adding all permissions of a low-numbered rank to all higher-numbered ranks. But I don't think it does that, and I don't think it should do that.)
A better term would be "title", I think.

The proposal
I'd like to have composable guild ranks, i.e. allow people to have multiple ranks.
So a character could be, say, a "Lord Protector" and also an "Ambassador". Guilds would be free to assign titles as they see fit, designating some as ranks and some as honorary or temporary titles.
There would be rather little game mechanics involved. In particular, the game need not differentiate between a "rank" and a "title", the difference is just in the minds of the players.
(There would be a schema change involved to allow multiple titles per character, and the GUI would need to support editing the list of titles, the permissions, and the list of titles that a player has - not a trivial change I have to admit, but I kinda like the RP possibilities that that offers.)

Thoughts?

I like the idea of keeping guild ranks and guild titles separate.  I'm not sure where I could see the multiple guild names being useful for my guild, but I'm not so snobby as to assume that it wouldn't be useful elsewhere ;) I think that's a fine idea, Elvors, and with what I remember about the Warriors guild structure, perhaps it could be used there.

I think your point on the term "rank" is also a good observation.  Most guilds tend to scale permissions with how high a given member is in the ranks.  As you pointed out, a guild could have very little permissions associated with rank 8, and all of them associated with rank 1 or 2. Specific to TAO, the only rank with master privileges is 9, and 8 has virtually every permission that 9 has, with only a few small exceptions.  Because there's a dual path between the Knight, and the Ambassador, the privileges in our guild tend to look like this, with x representing roughly the amount of privileges (and no, our level 1 DOES have more than one privilege :P):

Level 1 (initiate): x
Level 2 (Mantharor): xx
Level 3 (Apprentice): xxx

Level 4 (Knight):        xxxx
Level 5 (Journeyman): xxxx

Level 6 (Master):         xxxxxx
Level 7 (Ambassador): xxxxxx

Level 8 (Council):      xxxxxxxx
Level 9 (GL):            xxxxxxxxxx

What I'd mostly like to see, as Weltall referenced earlier, is a expanded system with more "ranks" to it, in the meaning that you pointed out earlier Elvors.  I'm not sure if this was a point that you're trying to make, but I think it can be extrapolated from your good points earlier :) Additionally, if there would be a way to combine two "equal" rank levels in a guild, i.e. Levels 4 and 5 for TAO, the Knight and Journeyman, who are already equal in guild status and privileges, it would be nice to see a combined Level 4 privilege tier, with two options under that tier..

Again, I'm not sure if you were implying exactly all that, but I like the points you made, and I think they correspond to what I think would be nice to have :)

Another good addition would be making it like Elvor currently thinks it works. It kinda sucks that you can't decide which people rank A or B can promote (currently they can only promote the ones below them). In the Empire, for instance, it'll be useless having more ranks if we have to place different types of ranks above each other.

Example:

1 - Aspirant
2 - Crafter
3 - Soldier
4- Mage
5- Crafter Leader
6 - Soldier Leader
7 - Mage Leader

We need all the leaders to have the same privelleges. What happens now is that a Mage Leade not only promotes aspirants to mages, but he also pormote Crafters to Soldiers and Mages to Crafter Leaders. Sure, it can be worked out since we're all plausible people, but still.

In DC everyone has an individual title, partly self chosen..I dont like hierarchies and ranks, so more steps would mean more titles.

This sort of ties in with what I posted about earlier regarding different sorts of "paths" within guilds.  I would agree that if this could be changed, it would be very helpful for different guild's ranking systems.
