... why only fantasy?
« on: May 28, 2003, 08:08:55 pm »
Hi :o)

I\'d love to participate on creating some virtual world. But I have to say fantasy in 3D is not exactly what I\'m into, and MUDs are not what I like too much ... (I just like to read good fantasy literature.)

Are there any plans for starting another worlds parallely with PlaneShift? I mean worlds where one could \"paste\" his own 3D-model of a car or some modern architecture, worlds where one could became an astronaut and then fly to the Moon or explore a planet where dinosaurs stil live ... (To be honest - looking for something like that was how I\'ve found PlaneShift.)
Sometimes I would like just to walk, look around and see things I can\'t see in the real world. But fantasy seems to be too restrictive and bounding for me. Than why not to move the frontiers of PlaneShift? :o)

I believe, no - I am 100% sure that there are LOTS of people who don\'t like fantasy AT GENERAL (they find it too silly or whatever), but they like gaming and modelling in 3D too - then why not to give them the oportunity to explore (and participate on) some non-fantasy world?

Things mentioned above would take \"only\" to manage planets as objects - the other stuff related to development and tuning would continue paralelly ... Am I wrong?

If you won\'t do it somebody else definetely will ... No matter how near or far future this is - I\'m sure we all know well that some Virtual World definetely will be created. Why not to start it right now? Why not to be the ones who will start it? :o)

Or - ... is there such a plan?

have a nice day

The 3d-engine is open source.
Just find some programmers and create some code.

I dont think that there are any projects that fits to your description.
Browsing the forums when I\'m bored, nothing more.

I know that.

> Just find some programmers and create some code.

It sounds almost like \"don\'t bother and do it yourself\". :o) Is this a typical kind of reply when someone posts a suggestion? :o))
(I\'m not capable of writing 3D-... whatever yet.)

> I dont think that there are any projects that fits to your description.

... well, if there were any, I wouldn\'t post the message I\'ve posted. :o)

I\'m not saying to throw fantasy PlaneShift away ... I just believe that opening a new (non-fantasy) world parallelly with the existing one would bring MUCH MORE users in the future (which is what - as I believe - every project on the Net definetely needs) ...

I\'m hungry for some virtual _3D_ world that would grow as people would add their works - also I believe that there are thousands (maybe millions) of people longing for the same thing; and I thing restricting the harvest of fruits of PlaneShift-team\'s work only to fantasy is not the best way to go ... Why not to use the work that is done for another purpose?

If I would start a whole new project on what I am talking about, I would have to start from ZERO - while I suppose that opening the new world without the fantasy-restriction would cost PlaneShift-team much less resources and work ...

This may be a harsh answer, but come back in 3-4 years, and it might be of interest to some. I think people have enough to do with the current fantasy version of PS.

I know what you want.
Mostly I want 3D to walk around in a virtual environment and see things, I can in real life. I especially like nature stuff, trees and grass. But they are really hard to make in real-time 3D. That is why I am learning Crystal Space, to create a beautiful environment for myself and just walk around, and show it to others. Maybe you can learn some of CS and someday we may start something.
Now I am in the depths of CS, I am learning the system part of it, as I want a few things to program (a new canvas especially). Then I would like to model some.
CS already supports really beautiful features, such as height-maps: wonderful terrains can be created with it.
Or a full plugin system: I can implement new mesh types: water, flame, cloth simulation, etc. - specular things. I am still at the beginning, but I am going on well.

But actually, this has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with PlaneShift :)
I play PS because I like 3D environments, and I have never played any MMORPG before, so...
Your idea is good, but it truly has no relation with PlaneShift. :)
Search on the web for it, like \"virtual reality 3d environment\" and stuff like that. You will definitely find something.

Interesting question at it?s core?but wrong place really, in the sense that this will be a fantasy game, and that is it.

Now, the question should be, why are there so many more fantasy MMORPGs as opposed to Sci-Fi MMORPGs. To a degree the same can be said for all RPGs. Also why are there so many more Sci-fi FPSs as opposed to Fantasy FPSs???

I think it is a question of who, what , when, where.

why don\'t you just open up a project on http://www.sourceforge.net and then make a bit of a fuzz about it (like on http://www.happypenguin.org) ...that way you\'d get some coders and artists ...use CS and maybe even some PS code (both are open) and in time you\'ll have exactly what you have in mind :] ...this is how these projects work

...but i agree, good question - wrong place ...PS devs are too busy with PS already :)

Why only fantasy?  Because this is a fantasy game.  If you made a Science Fiction based game why only sci-fi?  If every game were a combination of every genre, then there wouldn\'t be much competition.  And the way things are looking now, the PS Devs won\'t have enough free time for another game for quite some time.

Only n00bs don't quote themselves...

You don\'t seem to get the point quite, Aendar. :o) Ofcourse I know fantasy games are about fantasy and sci-fi games are about sci-fi (thnx anyways /:o) ... But I didn\'t want to put a non-fantasy environment into your fantasy game.
My point was to open _new_ world (more generally oriented) parallelly with fantasy PlaneShift, a world that could became something more than just a game ... When you manufacture bikes you got to have some know-how; and when you have it, why wouldn\'t you use that know-how on biulding a mountain-bike?

But forget it. I see that people around PS don\'t like that idea and I do respect that. :o)

have a nice day :o)

Why not developing a parallel sci-fi settings? Because we don\'t have the resources to do so. PS as is now takes us already an incredible amount of time and dedication: splitting it in different subprojects would only mean having each one moving at half speed, if not dying in a short time. If you want our team to create a sci-fi setting, please, find us the resources (coders, writers, artists) necessary to double our team, and your proposal will become more doable... but at that point you could more easily start your own project, since you\'d have a new team in your hands...
