Deletion of Character

Good morning. As a Mac user, let me first say thank you for your support. Playing PlaneShift on my iMac is a pleasure.

The issue that I am having is at the LogIn screen, I have 5 created characters but only one that I play as my main. I want to delete the others, number one because I don't use them, number two because I can't create others should I want to.

I click on the character I want to delete, the window pops up asking me if I am sure I want to delete this character and warning me that all the information for this character will be lost. I say yes to confirm the deletion, and nothing happens. I have tried this several times to no avail. This is the most important issue "Before Entering The Game".

One other issue Before Game is in the PSLaunch APP - this is the window where you affect all of your settings. I cannot launch the game from there. When I am finished adjusting my settings and click on the Launch button, nothing happens. I have to close this window and then click on the actual PS App icon to launch the game. This is not a major issue as the one on top, but I thought you should know.

I've been having the exact same issue with character deletion! Once I've confirmed the deletion, the window closes but the character's name is still listed and accessible. Relogging does nothing for me.

Such kind of bugs should be reported in the Bug Tracker. If it was not already:

PS#5017: Fixed in update 0.5.6.4 (to client version 0.5.6.1); unfortunately, receiving the current updater server URLs appears to be unreliable for many players (except the developers...).

I've tried using the Bug Tracker but I don't think I understand it. If you can explain how to use it I ill.

In the meantime, am I to understand there is no fix for this issue? Am I stuck with 4 character I don't want, consequently not being able to create another alt that I might want to play?

There is a fix.

You would have to update to get a fixed client (at least I hope the Mac client was updated too, but I don't know for sure).

Unfortunately, the updating procedure seems to be broken for many users (or have been ... maybe it is fixed already?).

Theoretically it should be sufficient to run pslaunch 2 times (with admin rights) to receive the current update server URL.

Practically it appears (or appeared in the last days) that there are (were?) people who never get (got?) the updated URLs, for different reasons. They may have to edit their XML files manually with a text editor.

About using the Bugtracker, I can't explain that in a few lines. It depends on your experience in using search engines in general. But it is definitely a good idea to click the "+ Advanced" option to expand several search attributes which help you defining your query as exact as possible.

For example, I searched for [ delete char ] also in [X] comments and [X]details and [X] for all words, in both open and closed tasks (Ctrl + left-click in the listbox). That reduced the list to "only" 4 pages, but I found 3 matching descriptions on the 4th page.

Thanks LigH, I'll play with this when I get hom. Hopefully it will work. I do know that there is is no "update" button on my PS Launcher screen.

There might be another option: you could try going on irc channel #planeshift-build and asking for a dev with database access to do the deletions for you. I am not certain anyone but weltall has the required level of privileges and he is usually pretty busy. One or more of the GMs (#planeshift-gmtalk) might also have the proper authority but that is less likely.

The last option that you can do with nobody's help is to get a new account. You will need another email address but they are pretty easy to come by. A side benefit of this is  four more character slots and one or more of them can go through the tutorial and get the startup benefit.

This sounds a little extreme -    I can't believe there is no work-around to this issue within the same account. Is there no one in particular within the Technical Forum that one can contact to ask to do this?

another benefit for creating a separate account for your alts is you can play more than one character at a time (considering your hardware can handle it)

btw if pslaunch doesn't really work right there is the console way also that usualy works when trying to update.
i don't know how macos work but i do believe there are some console apps in it, you need to get to where the game is installed via the console and run pslaunch --console
i don't know exactly how this looks in the mac console but the command is similair, on windows it's pslaunch.exe --console on linux i belive it's ./pslaunch --console but as i have no macs to test this on i can't go any further.

well, on mac the programme is called Terminal and you'll probably find it in the folder 'Dienstprogramme' (Utilities? or system utilities?)

I don't know about the command though...

I'm on a Mac myself and just tried to delete a character. It worked almost fine. After the message 'are you sure?' I had to enter my password. I was kicked back to the login screen (the one with email and password) and was unable to connect again. So I quit and restarted. It connected properly and the deleted character was gone. I'm playing on 0.5.6.1, so maybe you really need an update.

If you're updater doesn't work like it's supposed to. You might want to force it by doing some manual changes. check here for details:

This might be the problem. My client reads 5.6 and not 5.6.1

However, it doesn't matter what I do, I can't update - specially via the PS Launch program.  Is there someplace where I may manually download the new client?

You can download the Mac ver. near the bottom of this page: http://www.planeshift.it/download.html

You may still want to run the updater first thing after you open the dmg file and copy the planeshift folder to wherever you like to keep it. Sometimes, I've had it crash right away, but starting it a second or 3rd time has always gotten it to run and complete any updating.

I have found a workaround to get the updater working, at least for Windows 32 bit.
