Pay per play
« on: May 29, 2003, 05:38:44 pm »
I think it would be helpful to the makers of the game although its just an Idea so don\'t bite my ass on this one. Just throwing it out for you Devs so that you could make a little money because we all know how expensive it is to make this game. However, if you had an income then you could rightly so have more servers and more people working on the game. Tibia did this. They allow it to be free to play. However you can have a premium Account which only costs like 50 bucks for a year which is nothing compared to other games. With a premium account you have access to two special Islands which only premiums can go to. You also can get some special spells as well as the ability to become a master which allows you to gain HP and MP faster. Just throwing that one out to you guys. The beneifits aren\'t so much that Premiums have a way unfair advantage over the normal gamers. You can shoot it down if you want...

Well, financials are always are and always will be a concern but I think that part of our mandate is to have the game totally free.   Now this does not discount other avenues of gaining funds such as promotional stuff, donations, etc.  Maybe we could even come up with some sort of hosting deals with Groups like Fragnetics where we can take a small percentage if people signup for webspace for Planeshift.

The trouble is that when money is involved things become \'complicated\'.

I think our main goal is to be totally Free to Play with no advantages.  It is a lofty goal but I am confident that we can achieve it.   Time will tell...

Not to make a short story long, but if we did get paid, who should get paid and when, for what????

And a billion other issues, so it would be really hard to be able to say yes from this point on X gets paid when there are people who came and went that have done more for the game.

So think about those issues and you will realize why money would make it an issue.

Well, both Tibia and Runescape used that system. Result, they didn\'t give a damn about the \"non-profit\" players so if you didn\'t pay, it became more like a demo-version. They simply quit developing the \"non-pay\" part, and that\'s one of the reasons I hate them both.
A lot of people like myself wants a game where the developers care about more than money.

I\'m thinking that they already decided that it would be free.  But if they decide otherwise a lot of people will hate them for it.  Plus like paxx said, too many people work on this project, so who will get paid?
Keep it free, and it will be the only GOOD free mmorpg.

I would go with the idea of Donating  :)  if you donate so much say you give the player some gold or crystals or maybe a special item?

I would donate every so often myself  :)  But thats because I am a nice guy love to help  :)  I am actually gonna apply to be a background writer  :)

There are many concepts to allow for payment of different sorts all on voluntary basis. I am sure we won?t mind is a linux distro or other picks up the game and makes it part of their package?but it will be their issue not ours. In all ways this game will be free to use, with all possibilities. Do not get confused.

THIS GAME WILL BE FREE TO PLAY. But we may need support of some type at some time, but that will take a while.

Have you considered the \"in game sponsoring\"?
It has made marvels with games such as The Sims Online, where players actually interact with elements from certain companies. The best prices for sponsoring can be achieved by this kind.

I know that it would be hard to have real life sponsors in a game such as Planeshift.
But what if you add static sponsor messages during the loading of the game, or small scrolling bars with sponsor messages, a la CNN newsline, in the bottom of the screen, or in any other area that they don\'t bother.

The Exit Game menu could have messages from a sponsor, as well as many other areas that do not directly affect the game.

The idea would be to keep them as far as possible from the enviroment of the game, to keep it as it should be: Medieval Fantasy.
But there are several areas that do not affect the enviroment, and could turn into something quite profitable if you think of it.

It would follow the example of several newspapers. In many countries, these free newspapers are given in the streets, free of costs. But still they make huge amounts of money. And teh why is very simple. They have sponsors and advertising in some areas. And, since the newspaper is free, the sponsors are asured that someone will read their advertisings.
The same principle can be aplyied here.

i dont mind paying for the game on a one time basis

but im no big fan of monthly charges

i suggest taking a look at Ragnarok Online and inspect how they come along as something to consider in future decisions: they commanded a LARGE user base in their beta period and just announced a $12/month fee....

In my opinion in game advertising would only ruin the game.  Looking at banners and such on the site I wouldn\'t mind.  And if I ever get around to getting a job I would definently donate money to PS.  Besides a free MMORPG that looks as good as PS does is going to get a lot of attention.  Players and even companies will be willing to fork over some money.

I think it\'s very honerable that the devs want to keep this free. They put all their time in this, and now a lot of people are almost begging to give them money, and they still say there are better ways to support them. Now that\'s what I call nice.

i think this is very stupid.
If you donate, it\'s for nothing in return, it\'s because you like the game and want to help, not to have a better item or so ...
i hate those who think like that sorry X(
