Fixing the update to 0.5.7
« on: June 06, 2011, 06:32:09 pm »
PS client can be updated now to 0.5.7, but to many the update doesn't come without manual configuration changes. If you can't update, find updateservers.xml file in your PlaneShift directory, and make it as follows:

Code: [Select]
<mirrors>
   <mirror id="1" name="sajut" url="http://updater.sajut.de/update/" repair="true"/>
</mirrors>

This should enable the update for you.

For a slightly more detailed description and instructions of how to do this on a Windows OS, please check out the following post(with Gilrond's updated server URL included): http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=39573.msg447599#msg447599

Thanks, Gilrond, that worked for me.  Pleases note:  Mac OSX file name is different, it is updaterinfo.xml,
not updateservers.xml.  I found it in the /Applications/Planeshift/ folder.  Also note that I replaced all the
text in between <mirrors> and </mirrors> with Gilrond's line (I had 3 different mirror ids in mine).

Updating now, can't wait to see my new magician robes   :sorcerer:

updaterinfo.xml is another file which is present on all platforms, but editing updateservers.xml should be sufficient. If it's absent, then you can do the change in updaterinfo.xml as above.

There are a few problems with that approach.

A: The package on the site is only updated for major releases (0.5.6, 0.5.7), not minor releases such as 0.5.6.1. I wasn't able to update to 0.5.6.1 (ever) because the updater on my client broke and it wasn't posted on the site. It wasn't until after 0.5.7 was released that I found and fixed the problem with my client.

B: I'm not entirely sure of the implementation details of the updater, but it most likely saves bandwidth to use the built-in updater. I would expect that the updater only updates things that are out of date, and ignores effect files, etc. that haven't changed. Assuming this is true, then the updater uses less bandwidth than re-downloading the entire client.

C: It's less of a hassle to use the updater (when it actually works!).

I'm going to need some more help. First of all i don't appear to have an upadater. The only 2 applications i have are pslaunch and psclient.

So i tried to modify updaterinfo.xml but it said it was of only lecture and i couldn't save it.

Thanks for any tips

The updater is a part of pslaunch.

When you start pslaunch, it immediately checks for possible avaialble updates and notifies you if it found some.

But that only works if it knows where to look for updates.

You should not edit updaterinfo.xml, but updateservers.xml; if that doesn't exist, create it.

You may need Administrator access rights to be allowed to create/modify files in an application folder under Windows Vista / 7.

Instead of fighting with the outdated/missing updater files, you should consider downloading the new installer for version 0.5.7, even though it is another 600 MB download; but the update would not be a lot less anyway.
