someone should submit the newspaper idea - Arch Angel

I\'ve heard talk of the newspaper idea but not seen any details. Please fill me in or give me a link to where to look, it sounds interesting. Of course one could also run a newspaper out-of game as a website.

Something I'd like to see regarding houses
« Reply #16 on: August 23, 2003, 01:16:23 pm »
First time in this forum so dont kill me if it was posted before.
In the other MMORPGs Ive seen(UO for instance) there was the building thing that you got somehow a house with nothing really into it.. and ive been thinking shouldnt building a house actually be building? and not just a house that appears out of nowhere?
hopefuly you\'ll agree with me that an extra class thats called a builder will get a lot of money from house wanting players yet will take at least a week(depending on the project size ofcourse) to actually build the house.
materials cheap and all and house sold for a lot more thus the effort put into building each room and room will pay off.

I know its a lot of work for the team probably but I also think it is worth it and could be a great feature

(again I ask not to kill me if you dont like that idea, I AM new here you know)

Relax, we\'re not gonna kill you. Maybe just rip off some limbs or impale your guts, but that\'s all.

You\'ll be happy to know that there allready is a builder class, along with architect.
And yes, this has been discussed before, allthough i can\'t remember where.

Now sorry if this has all been discussed before, but will you actually be able to choose the shape and look of your house? Like, draw a plan and then make a house based on it. You\'d have to buy the land for a high price to stop people from building willy-nilly.

I\'m sure the devs wont let Yliakum turn into a shantytown :P

A shantytown! Whoopee! I\'d really like to see cities being built that weren\'t there to begin with. I mean, if you could actually change the game yourself by grouping together and building a few houses, which would become a village, a town, a city...

I liked this idea at first... but after a while we would get wildly OOC stuff like \"Disneyland\"... I really want to see how the devs are going to limit the \'building\' skill so that Yliakum doesnt just turn into another elitist powergaming community that lacks any semblance of roleplaying skill

Agreed Dril,

Maybe the concept of Zoning should be put into play. You can only build in an area zoned for that and then the zone itself also determines what and how much can be build there. So the style of the buildings and the type of village, city that is built will be controlled.

The good thing about zoning would be that one can always change zones or what is allowed to be done in them depending on hoe the game develops.

Why not just implement a planning permission system where to build on a specific site have to apply to the local Octarch (Devs) to get permission to build their bulding on that piece of land. This way building numbers and styles can be controlled.

Of course this system wouldn\'t be used for market stalls as I have a feeling they would get too numerous to control in this way.
I have returned!!

thats not a bad idea... and about zoning - the devs will probably have an extensive list of architectural types for the game (afterall most games do), so why not make it so that when you are building the only options that come up in each zone would be it\'s respective archtecture... that would limit the amount of dev time spent on the issue (although they would probably still need to limit it)... guilds would have to apply if they wanted \'special guild buildings\' of course

buying land is a dumb idea.
applying for land is dumb.  trading land would be cool.  but it should be like the west was. u run out and clame it.  then you can sell it later.

yeah and what you are looking over is that in the West the land was given out in plots by the government...  it wasn\'t as anrachist as you thought... in  fact one of the Union\'s greatest achievments during the civil war was the continuation of government sponsored porgrams to shove people out west and keep the economy going that way :D

plus you may not like not being able to post your house \'anywhere\' but thats how things will have to be (I think) if we don\'t want the place to turn into a trash heap

I\'m with lixalot on this one, it should be necessary to send plans off to the dev for permission first, otherwise every noob with a few bricks would be building a house, so within 5 miles of the starting town therw ould be nothing but cheap, rubbish houses.
