I did get "pickup" messages from players clearing up their shops

It could be that only pick-up-messages from players who picked up their own guarded items are visible to the other players around

Oh I didn't think of that, I'd say that's probably correct.

It could be that only pick-up-messages from players who picked up their own guarded items are visible to the other players around

I think Weltall was quite clear, Everaj.

The system message has a limited range around the player who picks up something, just like most other actions. The range for getting the message is the same as the maximal distance from which you can grab items, 5m. This means that if you want to be sure to get a message when somebody takes what you have dropped, you must sit exactly on top of your item. That is what I mean with "a bit short". Twice the range for perception would make sense, or maybe the sum of distances for guarding and picking up things.

No, Evaraj, I tested both cases with weltall, picking own items as well as vice-versa. It worked both times as expected. Failed only that day when we tried it.

... 5 length units seems a bit short compared to the range for picking up items.

After some testing, the 5 length units seems a bit short to me too. Perhaps it could be given a greater distance weighted by some stat(s) or skill(s)?

Some skills that may be considered in the weighting; of both the observer and the observed; could be Find Traps, Set Traps, Intelligence, Will, Hide in Shadows and Pickpockets.

Better results with the weighting formula could increase the 5 length units range of the notice of picking up or dropping items.

the reasoning of it aren't rp reasons so skills and such things have nothing to do with this. This is purely a question of avoiding spamming people with those messages when not interested

Would it be difficult to add the following exception?
Less strict or no distance limits at all for pickup messages concerning items that are being guarded by your character.

The guarding effect is already limited by distance. Items which are outside are probably unguarded and can be picked up without a notice in the System tab because when your char is too far away to guard, it is also too far away to notice.

You would like to have a notice if someone at least tries to pick up an item guarded by your char?

No, LigH, these are two distinct things to me. Items are still associated with a player character guarding them even if they are placed far enough to be taken by other characters (see item descriptions in game). So technically, the logical connection btw player and item is still there, and probably also the interest of the player to be notified when said item is taken by someone else.
