bad installer URL
« on: November 24, 2011, 05:31:28 am »
i am running Kubuntu 11.10 and have downloaded 32bit version of the game. when i try to download the installer it says: "Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at testing.xordan.com.

Check the address for typing errors such as
    ww.example.com instead of
    www.example.com
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
    connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web." please help. i am greatly looking forward to playing the game

Where did you download such a hopelessly outdated version that it still refers to Xordan's server?! And which version?

The official download URLs are provided on http://www.planeshift.it/download.html

For the still current version 0.5.7, use the HTTP mirrors.

When version 0.5.8 will be published (soon™), the BitTorrent downloads are recommended for the first weeks.

i did get it from http://www.planeshift.it/download.html and here is a pasted potion of the page

"NOTICE: We only support the x86 and amd64/EM64T architectures with these clients. We do however offer the best support we can for those compiling themselves on other architectures!
Check this forum thread for important installation information and post any problems here."

EDITED BY TALAD: removed the links to avoid other people clicking on those :)

Therein lies your problem, you do not need to go to that forum page to get the download link the mirrors are listed just under that message:

Use one of those instead.

Perhaps that advisory ought to be changed or the post it refers to updated.

Indeed, now I understand what you did at all...

Do not go to the forum thread (which was only meant to collect advices about how to install, but is several years old now).

Simply use the "Download" links below it.

Then get a computer literate person next to you who can help you downloading and executing the installer.

I doubt it would make sense trying to discover your level of Linux knowledge before solving specific issues. Especially not here in the forum.

Each of the "mirrors" is one of several webservers which has stored a copy of the installer package.

You'll download the installer (the file "PlaneShift-v0.5.7-x86.run") from one of the mirrors to your local PC, then make it executable, and then execute it.
