I'm not sure what happened between 0.5.7.1 and 0.5.8, but my client crashes near or at the end of loading the world (Win 7 Ult. x64) I did encounter one error that required the updates to do a "repair" in the update process as the update failed (I think it was the launcher that failed) But... I'm downloading the torrent(s) for the 0.5.8 to make sure... so I will update if the problem still persists.

(Audio on or off didn't matter in the launcher; audio was on in the client. Attempting to set the graphics to low from the launcher made no difference either.) Meaning, I can sign on, choose my character, hear the background music, and crash in the process of, or at the end of the process of, loading the world.

For those others encountering the same problem, what are the suggestions? Were the patches to 0.5.7, assumed included in 0.5.7.1. incorporated into the 0.5.8 release build?

EDIT: Uninstalling the old and installing the new seems to have worked. It is still a little temperamental, but at least it appears to be working.

Did you possibly use a skin mod?

Skins (data/gui/*.xml) tend to change remarkably, modification authors need to adapt their skins over and over.

I didn't use/install any custom skins, just the default one (if there is such.)

The only hiccups I see now:
  • occasional frame stutter and small delays in Hydlaa, or loading an area.
  • The on-going issue of it crashing on exit. (Sounds perhaps like it could be a memory leak, I'm not sure though.)
  • Tabbing out of the client causes the client to crash. (0.5.7.1 at its worst seemed to only suffer model degradation.)
  • Apparently an NPC is now on a timer to move about, was moved off the roof of Hydlaa's Tavern to who knows where, or removed from the game. (IF the latter two, this causes problems as she is involved in at least two quests in-game.) I will report it on bug-tracker IF it's confirmed that the NPC is not on some timer for moving around (Although it was 10AM in-game time when she was noted not present by my character.)
  • Someone has a book in Hydlaa's tavern about some event, and there seems to be some weird artifacting? thing going on as a line comes off the book (well a broken line) and points toward the stairs. (ZeroPing)

So, it IS now playable.

Might get better over the time...this usually happens if the client needs to compile the shaders for a model you never encountered before. Those get saved then in the shadercache so after some days of playing it hardly happen anymore.

The on-going issue of it crashing on exit. (Sounds perhaps like it could be a memory leak, I'm not sure though.)
Ah..PS does that for years already. It's usually safe to just ignore it. My guess is more the wrong order of releasing objects at shutdown.

Tabbing out of the client causes the client to crash. (0.5.7.1 at its worst seemed to only suffer model degradation.)
Can't say much there as I never run PS in fullscreen. Looks like a bug...but fullscreen support of PS is..ahm..poor to say it in a nice way. For better stability (and playability) I recommend running PS in a window.

Apparently an NPC is now on a timer to move about, was moved off the roof of Hydlaa's Tavern to who knows where, or removed from the game. Definitivly a case for the bugtracker in my view.

Someone has a book in Hydlaa's tavern about some event, and there seems to be some weird artifacting? thing going on as a line comes off the book (well a broken line) and points toward the stairs. (ZeroPing)
Also an old problem...try turning off shadows in options (<o>). You won't miss much eyecandy without the shadows anyway...they just look like every char standing in a round puddle of mud.

Same thing is happening to me under Linux (Fedora). No time to ticker with things more than that at the moment.

I've still to find a game in windows which doesn't crash some times with alt tabbing, many crash all the times.

Attempted to do a totally new compiling following the steps as outlined via the compiling instructions with the exception of the nVidia Toolkit step; as the system has not been changed since last successful compile.

Received the following errors:

Code: [Select]

    g++ -c -o ./out/linuxx86/optimize/src/plugins/common/soundmanager/songstream.o -I. -I./include -I./src/client -I./src/server -I./src/common -I./src/tools/wordnet -I./src/tools/breakpad -I./src/tools/breakpad/third_party/linux/include -I. -I./include -pipe -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections -march=i686 -mtune=generic -fvisibility=hidden -fvisibility-inlines-hidden -g2 -O3 -fno-omit-frame-pointer -ffast-math -Wdisabled-optimization -fPIC -I/home/booner/development/cs/include  src/plugins/common/soundmanager/songstream.cpp

Any insights welcome.

[Edit: Just to be clear the system already has NVIDIA Cg 2.2 February 2010 installed. ]

too old cs

The previous contents of the cs directory was deleted and then refilled using the command:

svn co -r 36451 https://crystal.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/crystal/CS/trunk cs

Where else would one get a newer version?

Jut use CS HEAD. So do a "svn update" in your "development/cs" dir and recompile it. Ignore what the compilation guide says about the revision..it's outdated.

The edit was mean ;)

Just the thing Aiwendil, Much thanks.

Someone may be interested to know that the art directory is also out of date at the location given in the compiling guide. Once the latest art package was grabbed then the crashes stopped.

The edit was mean ;)

Sorry about that. Still had sleep dust in my eyes.

For a fresh source install I usually run "./pslaunch --repair" to get the current art. The updater won't overwrite any binaries on a sourcecode-install so will only fetch all data and art. The only problem is that you might have to revert some changes in "data" (especially "data/gui") afterwards as PS trunk often contains new gui elements which are not in the offical data yet.
