Bringing Back the Old
« on: December 24, 2011, 04:33:35 am »
I'm sure a lot of people have seen the "oldbies need to come back to the game!" threads, but... well, this is a bit different. Sort of.

I've been thinking... a lot of roleplay from way-back-when has been lost in the annals of nothingness. I was wondering if any older players would be willing to bring back their old characters (whether they were formerly killed, died, took a "long journey somewhere else," or anything that would have rendered them impossible to make a comeback in Yliakum/the game). I myself have been curious about how the new leveling system will play out, but I wanna come back with a character (or maybe a few) that I was unable to continue roleplaying with due to this reason or that.

There's something else too, though. Because a lot of these characters are lost in history, so are their roleplay scenarios. Therefore, I'd wish that any characters brought back never act as if those roleplay events happened. Meaning any ideas from before can be recycled in the new community and environment for a newer population to enjoy. A large part of what people miss from back then was, in fact, the events that took place, and new settings or not, they can easily be melded to fit what's here today. So anyone who wishes, I'd like to hear from you and we can see about getting a "new old playerbase" going with characters that we've let collect dust in the burial wells.

Now there is a new thought... I could just bring back Illy. XD however, I do think full resets are kinda hard. But maybe everyone agrees to ignore some things. It sounds like a good idea.

However, I got something *cough*event*cough* going right now. Have you been around for that Suno?  ;)

Hrm...tis an interesting idea, I think. I'd like to meet some of these older characters myself. I approve

Can't say I have. :P Just through my skimming it seemed like some sort of ball/costume-type event... I don't really have anything to match the part. But I do know it's brought a few people back as a matter of fact!

Would be interesting to see them come back and try something rather than being bitter on the forums.

When I saw the rise of the new music system, I pondered for a second if I could return and try my band idea again. But well, only for a second.

Because you see, I didn't really leave because I found the lack of good roleplay disturbing, but because I got too emotionally attached to my character, and started to care for her well-being almost more than my own. I felt with her, was hurt when she was, and it got harder for me to distinguish IC from OOC. What made even it more complicated I think is that I never really talked much OOCly with the people I RPed with, so for me they mostly were their characters. I wrote fscking poems and songs about some of them. Also, I realized that I had an unreasonable OOC grudge against the players who hurt or disappointed my char ICly.

So I decided that, as much fun as it may be at certain times, dense and involved roleplay might not be the thing for me. There's no reason to doubt my decision. I would have made the same if PlaneShift were a great, finished MMORPG with an actual (not just claimed) RP focus.

Now some shorter RPs with a few smaller, less grave characters, that might happen.

Not that much of a fan of this idea...but I can deal with it (Most important is to see some old "friends" again). I actually liked the bonds that developed between chars. But the bigger problem for me is probably that you have to tell me of what chars I should forget the past. Sure, I can still remember the Kran caring for the little girl or the assasine char and I think Suno and Aiwendil never met...but I guess there is a good chance I ran into some of your chars and didn't know you played them. So please make a thread "Chars that should be forgotten" and put all char names in there of which others should forget the past.

But nice to see you giving a short visit in PS at least a thought. ;) So all that poking and begging really helped.

@Phantomboy86: Okay...I really start to get annoyed about this. Yes, I know you probably didn't mean it like this...but the people being "bitter" in the forums are also those people that were pretty active in organizing events and helping out the game in general in the past (and still do at times). I'm so sick of people calling everyone else "bitter" or "troll" just because they don't agree with their opinions. But I know..the PS team did a good job in teaching everyone to act like this.

Hey Aiwendil. :P

I don't really feel I should have to make a thread since the characters "to be forgotten" have already been forgotten. I was talking more along the span of years where a whole different community was actively roleplaying. Very few older players, maybe three, would actually remember (if they're still playing) anything that happened then, which makes it ideal for any characters and events from back then to return without anyone really knowing that they'd even happened once before (and I don't mean going line-for-line of course... just bringing back some ideas rather then acting out the past all over again).

Of course, anyone who wants could bring their characters back, but I don't feel I need to make it a huge event of sorts. Any individual retconning or forcibly trying to make people forget they ever roleplayed with a particular character, I feel, should be left to the person willing to go through with that. In my situation, I've had so many characters spanning across around seven-or-so years that only a very small handful of people would remember if I brought them back to Yliakum.

But thats just it, the past. Not now, when it would matter.

If you really wan't to play, you'll find a reason or a way to make it happen.

Ok working back up in reverse order...

@Rigwyn: so true...

Phantomboy has not only proven that he doesn't keep himself well in formed but also that it's not worth getting worked up over what he says. No amount of ire will make simple facts any clearer.

@Suno : Since the characters coming back might know each other, I think that is the bigger issue. That's like me bring my characters back and someone brings back characters that my characters had a grudge against long ago... That is definitely not forgotten. ;) The new players might not know the old players' RPs but those RPs weren't done for the new players. And for what it is worth, I still remember crap my character got into 6 years ago. :P  However, I do think it could work if players contact those that they knew before, when they see them, and ask for mutual forgetting. ;)

@Aiwendil: Just ask in tells when you see a player back from the dead. ;)

@Derula: aww... Sorry to hear that but at least people will see you for shorter stuff. Even little bursts can be fun. :)

And back @Suno_Reign: See you should have looked deeper. It's not just a show up and dance the night away thing. ;) There are already things going on that are meant draw in everybody. The merchant area is up now and even baddie character can jump in and sell *ahem*unique... goods as long as they are discreet and don't get caught by guards. ;) I'm sure there are some plotting mischief for the ball itself... >.> You know who you are... And there are a lot of opportunities to make something for yourself to get into. You just gotta bother. ;)

Because not caring about what has been long gone and no longer affects anybody (besides the like... Iunno, 3 people that were around 5 years ago?) means im out of the loop. Brilliant.

If those characters had a grudge against each other, then that actually makes it more worthwhile. You're able to bring back that old rivalry, work out with them what is and isn't known or what did or didn't happen (since both characters are coming back for the same reason, after all) and make some new storylines with your favorite blasts from the past. Nothing wrong there. That's actually what I was hoping would happen, same with character friendships.

And back @Suno_Reign: See you should have looked deeper. It's not just a show up and dance the night away thing. ;) There are already things going on that are meant draw in everybody. I have a bad habit of skimming :p Whoops!
