Fantasy RP Story Line - Any Interest?
« on: March 06, 2012, 09:09:35 am »

I've been entertaining the thought of starting a new, semi-dark fantasy storyline and parting from my current trend of crime based RP. What I have in mind is starting a guild/group that's centered around a story. The group would focus primarily upon its own internal storyline as opposed to causing havoc at random, or spreading crime in Hydlaa - though members would certainly be free (and encouraged) to branch out and connect with others. We might also keep track of the story in a way that members can catch up should they be away for a while.

I wanted to put a feeler out and see how much interest there might be in this sort of thing....

To start, this would not be an evil organization, though there would certainly be plenty of room for evil characters or for non-evil characters to stretch and partake in evil deeds. I think going "too dark" might be a mistake. ( kinda like trying to draw with a lead pencil on a black piece of paper )

We might start out as a small community of sorts in the beginning, then add some conflict once the community has been formed. For example, we might add some twists to the story that challenges a character or sub-group's alignment - causing them to make choices and accept consequences. Again, this would be story-driven, so there would always be something happening. It would not be just a guild where people share a common name and an equal sense of boredom.

As for the issue of stats and rp conflict/fight resolution, stats would not be taken into consideration for this line of RP, rather each player would declare their character's strengths and weaknesses and just go with that... so if you want to RP being an archer or mage, then fine, you'll be treated as such.. no need to train.

Have a look at some of the pictures I've added below for inspiration and tell me what you think... and I'll tell you a little more about what I have in mind. Some will note that not everything here will fit with the settings. Again, these are only meant to help inspire or stimulate ideas, likewise, some things that don't work with the settings may work just fine within dreams or hallucinations.

This looks interesting. I have a main and an alt already (aside from other occasional alts made for rps) so it would be a third character i'd play a lot for me... but I usually play the most interesting of my characters so if our story is good I might get drawn in xD
I would certainly be willing to be part of something like that and mostly hear more of what you have in mind about it.

Alternatively you might want to give Dakkru's Devout a thought. We are practically 3-4 people in there but we roleplay as Dakkru's followers, that sometimes gives us a fondness for killing and illegal actions but our true cause is of religious nature (we are fanatics and frenzied megalomaniacs with faith as the common point). But we are just three people. This isn't an idea coming from all of us but I think this guild could develop into something very interesting with the contributions of new well-worked characters.

This is interesting, and I've taken part in discussions along this idea before. I do like the idea of staging events or happenings that challenge other players by putting their characters in situations where they have to make moral decisions, true tests of character.

I know a player (iXi) who, when she first began playing was a one woman version of this. She ran an amazing storyline that involved loads and loads of characters, (she played each one), had murder, intrigue, romance, weapons of mass destruction, self sacrifice, prophecy, and tons more. It was thrilling to say the least. This was maybe my second month of playing, and she totally blew my mind, made me realize exactly what kind of story can be told through this sort of medium. It just kept unraveling and growing deeper and deeper, and it served to define my character Aramara firmly in my own mind. I think its probably the greatest compliment you can give another player, to tell them that you understand your own character better because of them, because they challenge you, put you on the spot and make you think, "How would my character react to this?"

So yeah, I'd love to take part.

we are fanatics and frenzied megalomaniacs with faith as the common point

I think we have our new guild slogan  ;D

Not to turn this thread into a recruiting thread for our guild, but to take the guild in this sort of direction would be a fitting tribute to pay towards its creator. I do have some story plans prepared for the near future, once Unamorel's backstory is complete and she's ready to be brought in game.
all blessings to the assembled devotees.

You have my hyperactive imagination, Riggy. I'll come up with a character concept and contact you.

Cool, Rig. I'd be in if I didn't already have a guild in its early stages and no time to play an alt.

We might start out as a small community of sorts in the beginning, then add some conflict once the community has been formed. For example, we might add some twists to the story that challenges a character or sub-group's alignment - causing them to make choices and accept consequences.

See, that's where we aim to head with Ordo Phalanster and its three internal branches (except that it is also a traditional guild with an expectation of stats and skills progression). But I'd wanna stay tuned, make contact with your guild members on those occasions when your actions affect the wider community, as I'm sure they will!  8)

Good and Gooder!

This would not have to be a new guild, but could simply be a group composed of individuals and guilds. Sharing a common story with multiple RP guilds would be awesome. As for Ixi, I've seen the name before but have yet to meet her. Sounds interesting.

So here's one small idea illustrated with an elven character who I'll call Frendar for now. Its not the entire story, just one small part of it. A coffee shop known as "The Dreamer's Quill"

A Secret Gathering

The coffee shoppe was dark and rustic, the air spotted with the scent of books that reeked of humid days gone by. Frendar knocked, but only to borrow the attention of the crowd, then slipped in as he looked about. The calm, quiet chatter that filled the room and the warm but small fire from from the mantle was calm and welcoming. He stopped at the coffee bar for a mug of ale but was turned down. "Sorry buddy", the barmaid answered, "No alcohol. We have tea, coffee, juice, water... anything else that doesn't inspire foolishness."

He balked, then placed a coin in her hand. "Fair enough, make it a cider."

A Portal

He mingled as the day turned into night and found that he was not alone. The room was filled with those who painted books with words and splattered canvases with their dreams. It seemed that he had found the perfect place; it was too good, in fact, it was as if the place had found him.

"Have a cup of Falsbarr tea", a gentle voice spoke as a pair of greenish, elven hands came close. With a smile, the Nolthrir raised a steaming cup, and beckoned him to try. He sipped as others stopped their chats to watch, then moments later, knew exactly why. In that moment that he sipped, mere seconds to you and I, he slipped across a great divide - a portal spanning space and time.

Another Plane?

With the taste of Falsbarr on his tongue, his eyes had opened wide as mountains stretched to stab the dusky evening sky. Flying, scaly beasts like klyros ruled the air with horn topped heads and tails that slithered far behind. To the east, a pack of weary huntresses did stride - with a cart of hides and claws of beasts - twice a Maulber's size.

They invited him to sit with them beside a raging fire, as tales were told of floating beasts with tentacles and wayward glancing eyes. This place was one he'd never known, and his world to them, was equally unseen. The night he spent amid their pack, having heard a litany of lore, as their laughter dimmed to yawns and groans he drifted off to sleep.

Or was it just a dream?

Merely seconds passed. Looking from his cup he saw the shoppe and heard the sound of chatter here and there. The same warm fire burning warmly as they spoke. Was it just a dream? He wondered till he heard a voice describe the starry sky. Swiftly, he turned his head - and was greeted with a smile. But how did he know? Did he?

It would be great to see something like this come to fruition. I like the idea of not having to train up a char's stats... that gets tedious.

I have an interesting choice of character for this role-play. He's not very well known, but he may very well be, soon.
Ardoin: So, do you drink moonshine?
Earowo: As long as it has alcohol, I'll drink it.

Wow.. this is more interest than I thought I would see... This is definitely worth pursuing. Once the Black and Blue RP comes to an end, I'll start working on this one  \\o// .

I would be interested in hearing what everyone is most interested in. What elements of this proposal pique your curiosity, or motivate you to play. I want to make sure the event is packed with stuff that you like, so please open the flood gates and let me know what sort of things would be most epic.

ie.

Do you like being given quests, tasks, or missions?
Do you prefer to participate in an adventure, or to simply hang loose and do your own thing?
Do you enjoy stressful, challenging moments, battles, non-violent solutions, puzzles, or hunts?

In the meantime, her's a little more of the short sketch of a story above.

Or was it just a dream?

Merely seconds passed. Looking from his cup, he saw the shop and heard the sound of chatter here and there. The same warm fire burning warmly as they spoke. Was it just a dream? He wondered until he heard a voice describe the starry sky. Swiftly, he turned his head - and was greeted with a smile. But how did he know? Did he know?

Frendar took another sip to see if it was real, but nothing happened. The hot tea burned his tongue - confirming his suspicion; it was just a fantasy. Watching as he tried once more, the voice he heard began to till his mind once more.

"This starry sky you saw was very real. So too, the Enkin huntress tribe, but the portal that you found is closed; it shall not open again - at least, not here."

Confused, Frendar watched the dwarven man, as he pulled a chair and hobbled into place. He was short and wrinkled with a snowy, white beard that drifted down to his lap. His face was rough and tan like an old burlap sack, but his eyes were strangely familiar. There was something odd about his omnipotent stare. Having waited for a moment he asked, "How did you know what I was thinking?"

"I would tell you, but I doubt you would believe me. Likewise, it would dampen my credibility. Trust me; you would think I was a fool."

"Try me, I'm rather open-minded."

"No."

Taking a moment to tear a pinch of bread from his loaf, the old man shrugged, and then replied. "That place that you saw; you may visit it again if you like, you know - though the entrance will never be in the same place twice. One day it will be in the shimmer of a lake, another day, in the flash of a ring or sword. When you return things may be quite different, and likewise when you return, you too will have changed. You can't step into the same lake twice, you know."

"Why would I want to return?"

Frendar paused as he was met with a blank stare. He felt as if he had said something horribly stupid. It wasn't so much an inquiry, but rather a tactical statement - an attempt to fish an answer or two out of the old man. He waited but the dwarf just looked away as if uninterested. Seeing that his gaff would get him nowhere he asked,

"Who are you?"

"Seymord", the dwarf replied with a chuckling smile. "But that’s just my name, it doesn't tell you the things that you really want to know now, does it? You want to know how I know what I know, how I know what you saw, and perhaps why I contacted you."

Frendar silently nodded - not wanting to interrupt his flow.

"I'm an oracle; I get a feel for things that are yet to come, a taste and whiff of the future. You look impressed. What would you say if I told you that it was a rather useless gift on its own?"

"Useless?" Frendar laughed, "Are you serious?"

"Quite so, but notice I said, 'on its own'. What’s a lighthouse without a ship to warn, or a song without a soul to feel its tone? I have a hunch that you and I have a journey to share, a lesson to learn, a story to be told. I'll return."

Puzzled at his last sentence, Frendar looked around the room, then back towards the dwarf, but he was no longer there. His seat pushed in, not a crumb of bread in sight. Again, he wondered, "Was it real, or was it just a dream?"

I love your idea, dark-fantasy is one of the my favourite game style \\o//
I only regret having few time to play :(

About my preferences:
- I like to play quest and I also like to prepare quest for other players (so if any of you need help to prepare one I am glad to help  :) )
- I also like puzzles and battles

Speaking about battles and duels I favour using PvP instead of RPing them.
I know many of you favour RP over PvP but while I would roleplay a duel if needed I find PvP more exciting and fun.
