Non-combat training
« on: June 03, 2003, 11:55:57 pm »
How would everyone feel about training that was done not through combat?  I mean if you would want to try to train at knife throwing, you could go and fight a monster, or you could go into a knife throwing center and throw at a wooden beam with a bullseye on it.  Progression would be much slower, but much safer at the same time.   Would help newbies out so we dont have to see 80 corpses lying about either.

What kind of skills would you like to see trained like this?

What task could be used to train said skill?

Thanks for reading!

Ya. It kinda reminds me of lineage, where you hit that dummy 100 times. Lol. sounds good though. In the advanced bow training, they could make moving bullseyes, in the sword training they could have those dummies you shoot at target practice.

How about flying mount training?  You could rent a griffon or similar creature and fly around for say 15 minutes.  After that, the beast would return home.

Or crafting training.  They would supply with free materials and facilities, but you would not be able to keep the item.

Any more ideas?

I like the idea of training. It would become a medieval gym. Only thing is: would you have to pay to be able to train ? They say only the sun rises for nothing...

There would be combat oriented training (swordsman, bowman, etc...) but also body development (actual weight lifting wihich could increase your strength).

All this would go very slow, and would only be helpful for noobs. If it would still be quite helpful to veterans there is something wrong with the system, so we have to come up with a decent numeric example. Anyone good in maths ?

You would definitely have to pay for training.  I would imagine it would be for a per usage basis, but a \'membership\' idea would be nice too.  Say, pay for 1000 currency for 6 hours of in-game usage.  That kind of thing.

I imagine there would be:

Skill (all types) Training
Combat Training
Body and Mind (aka stat) Training

Basically anything that can be improved, besides experience and level.

Just a thought

I like the \"anything-that-can-be-improved-except-for-level-and-experience\" idea. Oh, would prices differ for the kind of thing you\'d want to train ? I guess that would make sense, some things are just harder to train than others...

the mount idea is cool, but wouldnt it be easy to ride the griffon? Or..if you mean by the griffon is wild and you must force it, then ok.

i think there should be also a maximum you can get through trainers. A trainer can only teach you to a certain level, the rest you can only learn.

In the words of Commander Vimes \'\'....real life fighting, in my experience, at no point involves prancing about with a stick hitting a wooden dummy and shouting touche\' \'\'

aka im against it in all forms :D
but i wont argue against it too strong coz i think im in the minority.

those words not against training, they are against training for one thing and think you are trained for another. It says mainly real life fighting is in no way similar to dueling.

and neither is shooting a round immobile disc in anyway similar to shooting a bird monster trying to claw your eyes out.
This is the same reason im against ppl who think they are tough because they box or do karate, (prince nas world lightweight champion boxer was knocked out at our local chippy)  too many set positions, real life isnt like that, theres nothing that truely teaches as the real thing, training in all logic just makes you better at training.

Im a strong believer that you cant learn properly unless your doing it for real, everybody has seen tom and jerry right? can anyone recite a full episode apart from the ones who made it?

weight lifting could increase strength too, but its not logical to stand with your character half an hour a day lifting weights if you know what i mean

im going to stop writing because nobody reads the long ones.
