Game crashed and Character gone
« on: September 18, 2012, 08:14:09 am »
I was working metal near Harnquist when the game crashed. When I logged back in it asked for password confirmation and I entered it, when I got to the character selection My main character was gone. Is there any way to get him back? Name was Valgarg Volheimer. I would hope I can get him back, there was a lot of work in him. I am so frustrated right now I don't want to even spend time building a new one up to have it disappear.

Another note on this is I checked on a new character by clicking on delete and it does have a confirmation, so my point is that I did not accidentally delete it.

Back ups are normally made, but i don't know how often they are made so it is likely that any restoration made will result is you having lower skill/level/less items.

When you log in the /only/ time you need to give your password is at that log in screen, if you had to enter it twice then it seems somehow the 'delete' option may have been triggered so when you were asked to confirm your password you were actually confirming the deletion which is very unfortunate. If I'm understanding your description of what happened correctly.

This is what appears to have happened as I tested it on a character that I didn't care about and it was the same confirmation screen. All I did however was to log back into the game and it asked for the confirmation password before I could even select which character I wanted to play. I do not believe that I selected the deletion. If all I lose is a day  then it is easy to make that up but to start from scratch is too much.

Well you will just have to wait for Weltall and/or Talad to see your request and have them look at the back ups. I would also suggest file petition which I see you have done. Good luck on hoping the back up is recent.

My suggestion is to not only have deletion as the game does but have a "are you sure you want to delete this character" after the password entry. or something along these lines. Make it hard as heck to delete something. In my case while I was normally logging back in after a crash I wasn't even thinking along the lines of deleting a character so I just assumed it was a security feature to every now and then ask for a confirmation. I only hope they restore the little guy.

You definitely selected the "delete" char option. There is no other place where it asks the password confirmation.

When you click on the delete button there is a pop-up with this text:
"Warning! this will PERMANENTLY DELETE your character.  Are you sure you want to continue?"

If you click on "Yes" it will then ask your password for confirmation. I think it's very explicit already.

I checked the backups, there is a backup of the 16th September where this char is still present. The issue is restoring data is not very simple, as the db dump is various GB of data, and requires us to restore it entirely on a separate DB, then do the dump somehow manually. So basically it's a lot of work.

The char has 35 hours of gameplay.

No you are right it isn't worth that much effort and thanks for explaining it. As to the explicitness of the process it is fine if you are knowing that the delete Character button is being hit and you know there is no other process in game that asks for confirmation. In this case however it wasn't enough but thanks anyway.

If you recreate the character, we can provide some boost to its stats/skills to compensate.

I did and i'm working on him now under a different name, Ragazzo Sciocco. I'm assuming you had Valgargs stats and materials that he had, it really hurt to see the materials disappear. He had money (easy to get no worries there) 52 chunks of molten iron which he was working on when the crash happened 2 in inventory and 5 stacks of 10 in the stock tank or in forge (I forget which). Had some tin don't remember how much and 14 or so gold, was 15 but I turned one to dust (learning process). There were several smaller items but can't remember to list them all. He was working in mining / metallurgy area. But anything you can do is better than starting over from scratch.
