Helmets / clothing
« on: October 09, 2012, 12:55:36 pm »
Not sure if these have been discussed recently (looked for it but couldn't find anything).

It would be nice if people could buy helmets. Weapons and armor are available, through looting or buying, but helmets aren't. Just like the numerous kinds of weapons, the same could apply to different kind of helmets. Buying them wouldn't have to be cheap though otherwise nobody would take the quest to get one.

Another thing would make a great addition is clothing. All one can do now is wear armor. Additional clothing like robes would make it possible to become a priest or something (of course I know Jedi aren't part of PS, but their robes are the best example). Or something like magicians wear. If you try to behave/RP both examples in basic Ylian clothing is in my humble opinion less convinceable than when you actually look like one. Other players would be tempted to play along easier.

People can loot or buy helmets (from other players, if not from NPCs). People can even craft helmets and sell them. People can even craft magically resistant helmets, if I remember correctly...

But custom clothing is currently not yet available. The system how armor is managed is still rather basic, therefore many different kinds of clothing (especially with different shapes, like dresses or robes) are rather hard to implement. And yes, this has been discussed before.

Crafting, looting and buying (from other players, without /shout a bit difficult to find out) is great of course.
But I still see no reason why not to sell them (for example offer helmets with limited protection) and keep the better ones for looting or crafting.

I know it has been, but I wasn't sure if it had been recently.

I don't really see a reason why basic (quality 50) helmets should not be available in NPC shops. On the other hand, players who hunt down high end mobs in search for magical helms typically have many such basic helms for sale. So instead of selling them to an NPC, I gladly give them away to new players for the same price.

Concerning clothing, you will have to do with mixing up armor types and robes for now, but if you like to modify your client to make some nice looking screenshots or videos, you can try to customize the corresponding textures in the art/materials.zip.  (Example: Left part of my signature.)

Since helmets are available both from crafting and quests can hands better quality items too I see no reason not to have some 50 quality helm available for purchase.

About robes they are not yet available for all races. Having them with different colours (texture) could be possible but texture will increase the client data size and it's not a very good solution. On the other hand changing the texture colours at runtime is possible but as always we need someone to code it ;)

Hmmm.... why not create new "armor" with 0 protection and have it look like clothing?
That wouldn't make robes possible, but offer different options to "customise" your character.
It would make things more lively  ;)

Just to be clear: Robes are already available from quests, but the 3d art for some races and genders is still missing. Texture and/or color variations on robes and/or armor pieces could be added at a later stage, but I don't expect that any time soon.

Thedish the problem is not having an armor-like clothes, the engine already support having "clothes" the problem is the 3D art which is missing and believe me it's really not easy to do (otherwise we would have already done it :) ). But anyone able to do good 3D art and willing to volunteer some his time for PS is gladly welcome to join :D

Yes you could possibly use leather or medium armor and change it's textures to look like clothing. Far more easier, yes. But at the moment if you look around PS there are so many other things to be fixed and created by the art devs. Races aren't even finished and that is something far more important than clothing at the moment. My guess is that you would need races to be finalised and probably even animation (character movements) to make implementing clothing feasible. I don't think Planeshift is at that stage yet.
You maybe roleplaying but you could still be OOC.

this is true, but being able to personalize characters (with clothes and maybe personal item colours) is a feature we want to introduce at some point.
