[GM events] Yarir brings his collection of books to Jayose.
« on: October 21, 2012, 12:48:20 am »
**In the last few days a number of posters can be seen advertising the book collector Yarir Bralos and his Book Fair**

I, Yarir Bralos am pleased to announce a return to Hydlaa with a selection of rare and never before seen pieces of writing.

On a date to be decided me and my associate will again be setting up stalls outside of the wonderful and generious Jayose and his library in Hydlaa.

Our books will be fair priced and I quote 'worth its weight in gold'.

Come and see the latest books that even jayose has only got ahold of, thanks to me...!

We also welcome any and all that have books poems, stories or any other written work to come and join us and sell your works.

Time permitting we will also be looking at the other books people bring and depending on quality will give you the oppertinuty to add them to our ever growing and explanding collection!

**Signed Yarir Bralos**

DATE OF NEXT EVENT - NOVEMBER 17TH

OOC:

This is a GM run event and the books being sold will be copies of all the latest piece of works that have been released by settings. This is a great chance to see them all in once place.

We will also be looking for pieces of work to be submitted by players to settings so that they might get included in PlaneShift and could very well end up at the next fair and in Jayose's Library.

The first was today outside of Jayose library and will be where they all are.

I would like to thank Shorina who was the only player who came and sold two books of his/her own. WHICH IS AWESOME!

And I want to thank who all came and bought books. Bonifarzia, Gonger, Hulla, Jilare, Karnath, Liliah, Mekora, Minks, Mordaan, Shorina, Taya, Telena, Vilthis, Yallin.

We would like this to be a bigger fair when both players and GMs have books to sell, so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE come along next time with your own pieces of work, books, maps, poems, stories, tails, guides... anything

Would be nice if the library kept a collection of maps too.  It would probably be really helpful for new players.  I remember buying a player-made herbalist map a while back, and it was extremely useful.

 Wow looks like so much fun ! Sorry I missed it now. Such a creative idea for an event, hopefully next time rl demands won't factor in and I'll be able to make it. Awesome job to everyone organizing this  \\o//

A next-time, and bigger, would be great. Would you consider running the event over a couple of consecutive days (say, fri-sat), if not at a continuous stretch then perhaps at different times? I know you can't please everyone but I am sure many more players in 'minority' timezones or with off-peak play times are interested and would love the chance to attend.

A pity that was just the weekend when I was unable to play. If I was, then Erelenga Karal of the Knowledge Seekers would have had to be there, to accept copies for reviewing for Jayose.

If there are people able to run it on fri/sat/sun then sure that can be done. Bigger would surly depend on players turning up and doing their own stuff, I'd be more interested in it lasting longer which would likely require more things going on. If there was enough player interest in getting this into essentially an arts and craft fair with a big active gm involvement including selling new things or demonstrating new skills (as was done with enchanting) and collecting player written pieces and players also selling their own stuff it would be awesome. But I don't know how easy it would be to get consistent turn out, especially over multiple days. I'd probably do the GM stuff over 1-2-3 days when players can come if they want and then have a designated period were we try and get as many together as possible with a set turn up time/day at the weekend.

The next book fair will be in November in maybe 2-3 weeks, there are some more books coming up we can release for it. I just up hope I can keep up interest, as at some point this heavy flow of new books will dry up without some help from writers =/

@Ligh: you would have had nothing to do as there was just one player with their own stuff. But if the Knowledge Seekers turned up and took part as well as finally being proactive in gathering stuff that would be cool.

Craft Fair! There have been some private discussions about having a second Dome Festival of the Performing Arts. It would be a good chance for people to show off their musical skills, and other performance arts. Any chance we could integrate something like that into the festival?

I would be willing to take collections and run a friday evening event for this type of fair on an alt. I'd have to get details, etc., but this is definitely in my vein of interest. PM me if further action is desired.
I regret to announce that this is the end.

I bid you all a very fond farewell

One thing that would have been nice is the option to buy more than one copy of the books. I had someone who knew they wouldn't be able to make it to the event ask if I could get books for them and thankfully I was able to have someone else buy a set for our guild's library and was able to give that person my own set.

If people had been allowed to buy two sets each, then a lot of those who couldn't reach the event may still have had books passed on to them.

With that aside, the event itself was great. I'm all for seeing more.

@ Cirerey: you messed up your quote so might want to remove your comment from the quote so its easier to see.

@ cairn: if you wana do a little thing on Friday sure, but I'd like to keep as many people together on one day as possible. But i'll be posting up dates here so you can see.

@ Taya: I want this to run IC so a merchant with a fix number of books selling them, not as a way for every player to get every book in one siting. Now following on it would then be IC that if one person wanted to by all the books the merchant would sell them, but then from a pov of game play that isn't going to happen as the whole fair could be over in 2 minutes. So then you can buy the books on offer with the knowledge that at least 50% of those books will also be on sale next time also knowing there will be a selection of new books. I don't want this to be like other gm events like carpet sellers that come a few times a year. For as long as we have interest we will try and do it every month.

Taya Re the one book per title limit, realize that it takes more effort to create the books than it does other items. For other items we can span them in stacks of 65 if we need to and if we run out it is fairly quick to span more. To create the books we need a blank book, then need to edit the title of the book, then load the text file into the book.Depending on how fast you type and how long the book title and file name on it can take about a minute per book. So someone coming up and ordering say 12 books in total would take some time to create all those books if you were already out of the books created ahead of time. So just for logistics sake we will have a fixed number of each title available at the start of the event with limited ability to create more books during the event.

As Venalan said there should be plenty of opportunities to get books since we have talked about rotating the available books at each event with some repeats from the earlier event plus some new books and again for logistics reasons  about 8 or 9 titles available at each fair from the GM merchant.

Just a note to people There have been many times in the past where players have organized book fairs with no GM involvement that have drawn many sellers and buyers.  Organizing such an event isn't that hard just pick a time and place, advertise the fair and maybe talk it up between your fellow players, especially those you have seen selling books before. Some players with more artistic abilities have created greeting cards that they have sold at the past book fairs or maps or "paintings" they have done with maps.  So anyone who things a multi day fair would be successful is welcome to organize one. We can probably get a GM to run a GM merchant at a player organized fair.

Sarva - I know how long it takes to make books, which is why I said maybe two per person, and maybe allow a second set to be bought only once no one else is lined up to try and buy any.

Venalan - I don't think everyone should get every book at once either. It's just a nice way to build additional little RPs on the side as a result of events like this.

If it's too labour intensive that's fine, but given the number of people who seemed to want to be involved but couldn't make it, it seemed like something worth suggesting.

Roled here~ :innocent:
I am also interested in and hoping to help organize some of the Faire.  We are approaching th 6ixth? 7th? anniversary of the Knowledge Seekers, and soon to open our Ojaveda Campus of the University of Yliakum, so it would be great to be a part of the organizing and celebration.

How about your lurkers who wrote books and submitted them to the KS during the last 2-3 years process of getting them in game? In the past at Book Faires KS has organized some of you authors to do public readings of your work! Once the GMs set the date, I am willing to help organize such public readings, so be thinking, and or be writing. or be finding your copies of your stories, or be making some copies of your books to sell, whenever the fair is...
AND the idea of the performing arts fest too is a great idea! Are there musicians among you who are crafting music? AND we used to have storytelling nights too, so I am going to ask some of the oldbies especially- like Yahn "growing old in the Bloodstone Breathern" and all you others to think about telling some of your lore and stories too...  \\o// \\o//
This could be really fun and great opportunities for rp for the whole community! Please think about participating!
