Keep getting "The server is not running or is not reachable"
« on: October 29, 2012, 06:37:21 pm »
Hi!

I came here because I keep getting the error message "The server is not running or is not reachable" when I click on the login button. I have no firewall, proxy or whatever, I have a fully updated version of the game, I did correctly create an account on planeshift.it. This is the first time I try to play the game.

I'm running Archlinux 64bit.

Thanks!

Sounds to me like you may have stumbled across a server downtime, perhaps? Try logging in now, and perhaps screenshot the message it gives you to report it in bugtracker or here.
I regret to announce that this is the end.

I bid you all a very fond farewell

I thought about that, but I tried lots, lots of times today...

Here's a screenshot:

This site:
http://planeshift.subhosting.net/index.php?page=stats
is not registering any server downtime within the last day, so I'm willing to bet it is a client issue. What version of the client are you running? It might be a simple matter of needing to update or needing to run repair. Mind you, someone familiar with linux would have to help you if that is not the issue.

Just a long shot... Maybe try deleting the updateservers.xml file in the PlaneShift folder and then re-run the updater program. If it has the old server addresses in there, it could be giving you no connection as it does not know where to look for the live server. I think that is apropos, anyway.

Even after deleting the updateservers.xml file, I've got "Checking for updated to all files: no updates needed!", so I guess it's updated :/

Also, I downloaded it from planeshift.it yesterday, so..

Sorry for your problem.
Did you tried pinging at the server from a terminal?

Code: [Select]
ping planeshift.subhosting.net
What did you get? Then

Code: [Select]
ping 209.59.234.149
does the same?
If the first command fails to reach the server but the second it does, probably there's a DNS issue. Try changing your DNS.

If both commands either fail or receive response, well, I don't have a clue at the moment.  :)

Both pings respond correctly :/

EDIT: Also, when I enter a wrong username or a wrong password, the game tells me that my username/password are wrong, so I guess the game can reach the server.

As no one seems to have reasonable ideas...
I don't have one. Maybe you run wireshark and log what client and server talk. This might help to identify the problem. Or not :(

Good luck!

Edit: I tried it, and I see a packet from my client sending my info (with some unknown number (passwd..., probably) and then a reply from the server sending the info of my character, partly plain text.

I have no firewall, proxy or whatever...

Does that include your PC only, or did you possibly forget a local network between your ISP connection (DSL router or whatever) and your PC?

BTW, a DSL router itself is already a kind of firewall. Usually they should keep open the same port for listening which was just used to send packets, for a little while. But if yours doesn't do that for random UDP connections, you may have an issue. Which might be solved by a tunneling software, as described somewhere here before...

Well, I have my own router, sitting next to me (a netgear), but I checked it's configuration, its firewall allow by default any connection on any port.

Also, I just tried with another computer on my network, a Windows7 64bit, and there's the exact same bug. So I guess Linux is not involved, and the problem is my network..

I used to have a problem because for some dang strange reason I didn't have upnp enabled on my router.

Perhaps call your ISP if you're not able to enable upnp, and let them know you're having a problem.
I regret to announce that this is the end.

I bid you all a very fond farewell

Try calling your ISP with the problem. I admin a network at my job and sometimes there are just websites that despite everything working correctly, are unable to be reached. You may just have trouble getting the connection.

Of course, this is last-ditch. I imagine there's something brutally obvious that we're all missing, which would stink.

Also, un-install completely, ensure all vestiges are removed, and re-install. Make sure if you're torrenting that no pieces were lost, or just download the entire package .exe style. Ensure you're running the Linux version or the correct Windows (32 or 64, always 32 if you don't know), etc.

you get the point.

I regret to announce that this is the end.
