Trouble a'brewing
« on: November 12, 2012, 10:44:19 pm »
Many of you know me as a dwarf who likes his beer but I'm not the only one in Yliakum who likes a drop of the good stuff.

After chatting with a few friends downstairs in the Kada-El over a mug or nine I got to thinking....

What's your favourite "in character" brew?  what's it called? how is it made and what goes into it to make it stand out from any of the others?  (beers, wines, liqueurs and spirits are all invited)

I can only think of a few that have graced Yliakum
(ordinary tavern)Beer, Red liquor, terevan wine, Dermorian longbeard, Fyran Liqueur  and the two winners (Troyyer's and Ketta's) from the bloodstone birthday party: -

Quote
Hunters real stout

The pure taste of nature
Its a cask-conditioned dark unfiltered beer
Only the purest, finest and traditional ingredients, roasted malt, hops, yeast and fresh spring water
It pour with a good creamy head.A very strong stout.made for a strong hunter

Ketta's Fire Mountain Lager!

Named so because the hops come from the crater of the volcano!
It has a robust flavor and you might detect a hint of blackbush stem...which accidentaly fell in...
The sparkling water is from deep in the caves past the waterwheel at the Bronze Doors..
A fine lager with an attitude!
aged for about twenty minutes...

what would you create if you were running the brewery/vineyard/distillery?

When the Outlaws ran the Red Crystal Den, we used to speak of a "Bloody Vigisimi on the rocks." It was more of an inside joke than an actual drink xD

I've always liked the Fyran, but Brado's cider is classic for all Enkidukai as well.

* Gag Harmond usually orders sweet Malt Beer

But there are a lot of herbs one can use to make different kinds of root beer: Sinaflar Root, Black Walnut, White Oak Bark, Cinnamon, Dandelion...

Just a quick notice we are collecting ideas on brewing, so both recipes and drinks names are welcome!
There's no guarantee your recipes will be in the final dataset but we would really like your contribution and your ideas here to expand the new skill we're working on :D

To let everybody submit his own ideas I would ask anyone to post just a couple of recipes and eventually add more in case the thread isn't already overflown :)

So... open up your favourite brewing recipes and share!  :D

Klyros crash landing lager:

Produced by a secret guild of Klyros. Made in a hidden brewery in a cave off the dark bottom of the BD canyon, the casks are cooled in the icy waters as it brews to maintain perfect temperature. It is a rice beer, lightly hopped and spiced with lavender flowers. It uses a strain of yeast only found in the brewery that yields a delicate flavor, but an 8% alcohol content. Hence the name.

Also Jezzi drinks a traditional Diaboli beverage (that I made up) called Demon's Blight. It is unfiltered lacka, muddled unripe joopiner berries, and a splash of Sand Arangma blood.

Those drinks Telena used to mix in the RCD:

Lover's kiss:
Heat a half cup with milk and honey up, then fill some red liquor into it until it's full.

Lover's quarrel:
Pretty similar to Lover's Kiss, just it gets frozen over on top.

Dead Man's Soul:
Half lacka, topped with joopiner liquor, a small amout of anything else.

[This drink has no name]
Hot tea mixed with a bit lacka.

Black Flame Brandy
Half lacka, half black walnut liquor. Then burn the surface (the flame will be deep violet)

Lacka-Macka
2/3 macka wine
1/3 lacka

Telnavi was a a brewer so I never had her mix drinks but I did have her make the liquors for the RCD which nicely enough took well enough for others to still use them. Here's a list of what she made:

Charmflower Liqueur
Dandelion Wine
Jookan Liqueur
Joopiner Liqueur
Lacka - Strong liquor made from pungent tubers
Macca Wine
Pale Ale - Beer made with hops

I think there were a couple others but now I can't remember.

Well, we already have a number of "cocktail" samples here. But they are mixtures. Rheos instead will be more interested in more or less "pure" results of brewing and distillery processes.

So, prominent example: What is lacka, how is that made? ^ Onion liqueur? Yuck!

Mahkana brews a nice microbrew, using:

Hops
Malted Barley
Sugared Snowbud
Honey
a slow-acting yeast

It creates a mid-to-light ale with an earthy, sweet flavor.

Tubers are more like potatoes and Lacka is basically PS vodka.

However, back when I played Telnavi I actually did do research on brewing and liquor, which I've forgotten a lot of, but wikipedia as always helped. This comes from the brewing page.

Quote
The basic ingredients of beer are water; a starch source, such as malted barley, which is able to be fermented (converted into alcohol); a brewer's yeast to produce the fermentation; and a flavouring, such as hops.[4] A secondary starch source (an adjunct) may be used, such as maize (corn), rice or sugar...

With that in mind, available useful ingredients in game or in settings: Wheat, Barley, Strimptor(sugar), Berries and fruit such as joopiner and macca, Yeast of some sort (there has to be yeast to make bread and beer), water. So now... what interesting things can we come up with with what we have here? :detective: Hmm... probably easier to come up with drink names.

How about:
  • Airy Berries - Berry flavored drink favored by Klyros
  • Clackerhead - Hard liquor drink that you'd have to have a head as hard as a clacker to drink
  • Irongut - a reddish non alcoholic drink for Kran that is flavored heavily by Kran and contains a mineral that gets them drunk. Favorite of miners and other common worker Kran.
  • Grendol Guts - An ugly looking drink that is a combination of different colored drinks. Reminiscent of an Alien Brain Hemorrhage which you can google a picture of
  • Lady's Charm - A drink mixing a sweet fruit juice and Charmflower extract or charmflower liqueur. Pink or purple drink garnished with a charmflower. Needless to say, a girl drink

Hmm... now I wish I could get in game and look at what ingredients we have to work with.

Tubers are more like potatoes

Nobody told me that when I made their mesh and icon like pink onions. My dictionary told me that "pungent" means 'annoyingly spicy', and "tuber" was something I didn't understand. Now that I think about it again, I believe it means something like 'radish', all together.

Does anyone remember the cumbana?

Well, back to drinks. My favourite drinks. Remember?

My favorite liquor IRL is Fireball, which is Canadian whisky brewed directly with cinnamon.  A PlaneShift equivalent could be red liquor brewed with cinnamon sticks, with some PS-related name like "Lava Pit Liquor."

Why not call it Flamespire and have a cinnamon stick cut in the shape of a Flamespire stuck in the glass as the garnish?

Also, tubers are basically roots. I don't think that radishes count though as I believe you can grow new plants from all tubers but you can just stick a radish back in the ground and make a new radish plant.

Tubers are storage roots. But for some reason they are only the lumpy things like potatoes and sweet potatoes. Not storage taproots or bulbs like carrots, radishes, onions, and turnips. Why? Only a botanist knows for sure. There are also rhizomes. Another mysteriously different type of storage root.

Someone should create a dwarf brewer named Mented. "Don't drink that beer, it's fer Mented!"
