What's up with the attitude?
« on: June 06, 2003, 09:52:58 pm »
I mean, I hear a lot of \"We want a release date\" and stuff, the attitude seems a lot like a lot of the newbies want something from the developers. Just a small reminder that this is a free game, and the developers are doing this on their free time, so they are actually putting money into the game (time = money and so on).

And also, won\'t this game attract a higher % of griefers and lamers than other MMORPG\'s, being free and all? I mean, lamers and griefers don\'t usually pay for a game just to ruin it for everyone else, but when it\'s free, it\'s a different matter.
Thanks a lot Venge...

meh, there\'s always going to be people like that, telling them to stop isn\'t going to help anything because if it were that easy to stop them they wouldn\'t be doing it in the first place.

I know the basics of C++ but if you look at their help section it looks like for programmers they don\'t want beginners =)

Yeah, andvari, it looks as if you\'ve been through the same traumatrizing experience as i have. *shivers*

Scrythe: i have also tried JAVA, and the one thing i managed to make something work is TurboPascal. Muuahaha. I guess programming was never meant for me. Even HTML is more than i can handle right now.

Forget tutorials and get a solid book, like http://mindview.net/Books/DownloadSites

Meh...it will be exactly like MUDs, but with more AOLlers on it.

As long as the devs have the right mind to ignore all the \"omg pls chnge this stuffs it sux LOLOL!!11\" players, it will be fine.

try out  python ( http://www.python.org ) ...it\'s free, simpler to learn then C, it has some fine features (read the page, i\'m too tired now...), and 100% cross platform (bit torent uses it!) ...it\'s a great language!!!

i\'m still learning it, though ...i understand enough C to find and repair  minor errors while compiling, but i don\'t need to know it more ...for scripting i use bash (shell scripting rocks, baby!!) and i (slowly, because the time doesn\'t permit it) learn python and am in love with both (not very good at it though)

my experience with no matter what progging language is, that books and tutorials can never replace a course/classes, where you have feedback and some advice in the beginning.

Yes sadly enough this is becoming more and more frequent, because Planeshift is getting known to a wider public than (pre-)alpha/beta enthusiasts. That\'s one reason why I wouldn\'t advertise this game too heavily (at least not to inadequate public but is it possible to choose ?). Unless it can help the developers of course ;)

A kick feature (with voting system :D ) could maybe handle that easily enough for now ?

imho, the best way to progress (without too many headaches) is to practice. Then you are forced to ask yourself many questions that are not in teaching books. Write programs, and read programs from other people, preferably good programmers. There\'s plenty of open-source software to choose from, although it is not easy to tell good code from bad code when you are just beginning to learn.

Courses are good (if the lecturer is) and can boost the process. But you have to be available enough to attend them. That\'s why I prefer learning with a book and get my feedback from reading other\'s code  ;)  Both schools have their pro\'s and con\'s.

I will not talk about code cause I\'m a *biiiiip* at that ;) (you should try blitzbasic, it\'s cool http://www.blitzbasic.com ).

Concerning attitude of ppl, it would be cooler to include that in the game. I mean we could have some kind of \"moderator\" who could be clan leaders for example. When someone see a person having bad behaviour, he can ask help to the \"moderators\" who can kill him.
But this is a permanent kill ;) (a ban?? hmm, yes, but with more RP feeling. ;) )

If something is presented like \"lolol, this suxxx s0 much\", yes, it\'s not a way to give opinion. But a clear proposal could be really interesting.
And that\'s the point of a beta test ;)
