Steampunk?
« on: June 24, 2013, 03:38:41 pm »
Anyone here know how something looks when it's steampunky...
I'm in the midst of making a trainstation on my minecraft server or rather redesigning an old one and i'd like to make it have a steampunk look cause of the fantasy feeling my server has.

Atm i've gotten so far that it looks victorian but that's about it and it's not done anyway but if anyone knows then please post.

IMO the thing that most screams steampunk is improvisation added to the Victorian look. Lots of exposed seemingly ad-hoc machinery. Anachronism is almost required. If you can figure out how to do a coal powered mobile phone you are a steampunk god.

The control column of the Winch engine even looks a bit like steampunk. At least it is not certain what one would see in something that appears like monitors.

And ignore Mishka who usually exaggerates, in general. ;)

Are you building this in creative mode with cheats enabled? i.e. do you have access to server commands like /give?

Well, I thought of using single Nether Portal blocks as screens that can be set into walls: /give 90 1
Maybe complement that with a control block below: /give 137 1

Also fire on Netherrack is a great anachronistic asset to a steam punk building. For purpose of lighting, or as heating set into the walls along the hall in several fire places with chimneys. Even better behind glass, maybe! And don't have inflammable material like wood or wool near those (margin of four fields should be safe)

And don't forget the cobwebs and the vines to overgrow random parts!

Steampunk makes good use of brass, iron, rust and steam. Make sure to use dark woods, gold, iron... and a good rusty texture for a steampunk-like feeling. Cobwebs simulate steam rather well. Stone is advised against it, as is dirt. Use stone bricks, clay bricks, dyed hardened clay to make it look like brass, etc. It should look decadent, classic, post-aopcalyptic and modern, all at the same time.

Dunno if it helped.

Won't change from default textures but the rest sounds interesting even if i've used much stone in my build, mostly stone brick tho and a litle red bricks too, the hardend clay is from 1.6 and i don't have that but it should come this week so we'll see then :)

Have you fiddled with using different mod packs or high res texture packs to support metallic surfaces, machines and gizmos?  I'm not sure what's out there... perhaps there a SP themed mod pack? That would be terribly convenient.
