Celroc's Guide to Finding the Log Files!

Hi everyone!  One of the things that I noticed troubling our players (myself included at times) would be trying to find where the log files are by default on a system.  So, in this guide, I wanted to show how to make a shortcut for easy access to the logs.

For our Linux users:  Open a terminal and use this command to put a shortcut on your desktop:

ln -s ~/.PlaneShift/ ~/Desktop/PlaneShift


For our Mac users:  In Finder, hold down the Command key and tap the spacebar to bring up Spotlight.  Type in "Terminal" to locate the terminal app and then open it.  Once it is open, copy and paste this line into it and press enter to create a shortcut to your Desktop:

ln -s  ~/Library/Application\ Support/PlaneShift/ ~/Desktop/PlaneShift


And for our Windows users: Due to the difficulties in making a working example for the Windows command-line, I will instead show how to do it through the graphical user interface.  To begin, open Windows Explorer, which has its icon in the lower left corner area of the screen by default...


… and then click on the circled box shown in the next illustration to highlight its text and replace it with %APPDATA% before pressing the Enter key.



… Now in the list of folders there should be a folder named PlaneShift.  Right-click on it, choose “Send to” and then pick “Desktop (create shortcut)”



And tada!  There should now be a link on your Desktop pointing to the folder that contains your logs.

For Mac users, I say that typing on a Finder window ⌘(cmd) + ⇧(shift) + G brings up a dialog where you can enter ~/Library/Application Support/PlaneShift/logs without the need for a terminal

  Great stuff, Celroc, thanks! I use Windows, and yep, now no more having to use the 'search' option every time to find my logs.

There is even a much easier way for Windows Vista/7 etc.:

Enter "%APPDATA%" in the search field of the Start menu, press ENTER, and an Explorer window opens in the "Roaming" folder.
