Adding Casual Wear
« on: April 17, 2015, 06:30:30 pm »
It would be great to add non-armor clothes like, suits for males, dresses for females, and outfits.  Perhaps even outfits for each guild.  This could enhance the RP experience and allow for greater self expression with some variations in style.

Agreeing ! Thinking of a "tailor" job where you can design your clothes yourself (make the textures)

I'd be down for this! (And not just because I have a tailor...<.<)

Would love to see this, however would require a lot of work. Mainly art work. As we would need at least textures created for each race (and sex). Example for a new pair of trousers we have 9 playable races and all except Kran are male & female which is 17 textures (minus current missing models). If we could get a team working on it then it is possible.

What PS really needs are modular character models. Would make clothing a lot easier to add...

-edit-

It would make modeling new races easier and faster. You could re-use clothing textures. Modify the same texture for similar but different races.

Krans, enkis, and klyros would have to wear separate clothing since their builds are unlike the more humanoid races. Armor would have to be made separately as well.

-double edit-

By modular character models, I mean that each race's model should be based on a singular average model. This would allow for consistency. (For clarification, the game already has modular character meshes.)

I do understand it would be another thing to do and we do have quit a few fish to fry (I know that will spawn many interesting responses lol), however even a shirt and pair of pants could make many more variations of looks allowing people being more creative in the looks they can have.

I think for "casual wear", we should consider the same technique as for hair elements: Very simple textures with grayscale patterns, combined with shading of various colors. For hair, colors are presets according to the game's setting, but for a simple shirt or pant, this could be hex values specified by the crafter (or even just the owner) of the item.

Yes, this is exactly the way we'd like to go. However it will require a good deal of art and engine changes too :) however our aim for the future is to allow more customizable characters and this include more options for clothing.

I've been playing about, and UE4 allows material/item instancing where you can define different hues. So much like the images here from Bonifarzia's work it would be possible for us to do much more than just colour a grey scale image.

As this might be as easy as storing a hue variable in the DB and sending it to the client which then uses it when drawing the texture I think it would be an ideal way to go.

Would it be possible for players to dye clothing, such as in GW2 or Vindictus?

If we are able to do like Venalan said yes. From a Rules perspective, I see no problem, perhaps we could use the leathermaking or tailoring skill.
