Extracting the book text for out-of-game reading
« on: May 15, 2015, 05:58:12 am »
hi all,

I find that reading the in-game books, like the 'working with stocks' one is really annoying in-game.
Is there any way to extract their text so I can read them out-of-game in a text editor?

Are you aware of the /study command? The text is much easier to read and even a search function is included.

Before that was implemented, I used to type the books into a text editor or extract the text with wireshark. To be honest, both methods are about equally tedius.

That's a feature that is a bit problematic in the sense that details of game rules and settings,  or books written by other players are not meant to be easily accessible to the public. At least as far as I understood. But maybe there are some modifications around that can do this *shrug*.

Even with the /study command it can be hard to understand. Don't be afraid to ask for help with crafting in gossip or even in main if you can keep it IC.

I use Wireshark to capture the info.  Essentially, start recording with Wireshark and then open the book.  Once it's open stop the recording and take a look at the udp stream.  There will be some junk data, but the text of the book will be in there.

Isn't that against the rules?

I certainly hope not.  I'm not changing the information being sent in either direction, and looking at the packets doesn't reveal any information that isn't available to players who simple open the books.

To quote the rules thread.

It's not against the rules. Reading your own network traffic is perfectly fine.

Since when are you an expert on GM issues? Sure looks like "hacking into transmissions from the server" to me.

or perhaps "inconsistency"?

Those who are allowed are allowed inconsistency, those who aren't aren't?  ::)
