Facebook Page and PR
« on: August 11, 2015, 02:24:21 am »
So I was just looking at the official Facebook page for PS when I thought of something: it's really only used to notify current players of updates and events. It's common knowledge in the PS community that we have a bit of a PR issue, since 99.999% of the world probably doesn't even know what Planeshift is. What if we use the page to reach out to potential players, too? Posts about how events went, mentioning player-run RPs, and a little bit of community interaction could make a huge difference. All that it would take is this and a few people hitting the "share" button on occasion.

Some ideas:
1) Posting fan art and maybe even some PS comics (with the artist's consent, of course)
2) Fun quotes that someone says IG
3) Shout-outs about some fun RPs that you can read about on the forums
4) Random, fun, PS-related stuff (Planeshift the TCG cards, maybe?)
5) What can you guys think of...?

It's little things like this that could make a BIG difference in PR. We need to show off our awesome, tight-knit community to the rest of the internet!

I agree. Some GMs already started to do that on their own GM facebook page: posting about events, funny pictures, updates about small development going on etc.
I think it's a good idea to try the same on the main page.

Hey Demagul- just fyi

More than a year ago I attempted to do just this kind of pr project: more outreach, releases about in- game activities, blogs, and announcements on FB and twitter. Venalan was supportive, yet I got "thanks for your interest in helping" and no other support from GMs or devs or Talad. A small committee of us submitted drafts and plans and got no response from leadership other than Venalan. Ven thought it was a good idea, made some good suggestions, but said the final say for wording etc. on any public release was to go to Talad. There's an old thread somewhere here in the forums... I bet there are other old threads from similar ideas before my foray ...

BTW, this previous pr attempt was WELL BEFORE the GM debacle of this 2015 spring, back when Roled- with lots of help from lots of players and with Venalan's support since the GMs were basically inactive- was producing major player run events in game like the MagicCons and the Xiosia ceremonies and the speed roleplaying nights, and various other group and spontaneous role-plays. So I don't think you can attribute the lack of support then to the current "anti Roled" attitudes of many of the "leaders" now.

Yet, despite my lack of optimism, I hope it works for you Demagul. Maybe you will have better response. Good luck.

It's worth a try :D I mean, with the GMs' approval there could be another attempt at a player-run promotion for PS! If they help, awesome! If not, so what? We have players all over the world, I'm sure we can put PS on the map if enough people work together and are willing to accept a few minor failures before we succeed.

it maybe that ps will have to go pro for PR. there are many things that can be done by the dev team, facebook page for one. but, to get real results it maybe time to hire somebody that can provide direction and support. the team is full of good artists, writers, and coders. people with pr knowledge, skills, and contacts most importantly contacts are a fair bit lacking.

but hiring a pro, requires money. it maybe time to take a serious look about merchandising. with a revenue stream the pro can be hired.

though a bunch of newbs can be a mixed blessing, the eternal september was a bit of a shock to the usenet.

the other thing that must always be remembered, we will never be the next wow.
may laanx frighten the shadow from my path.
hardly because the shadow built the lexx.
the shadow will frighten laanx from my path.

I would totally buy a stuffed groffel.

Getting back on topic, I think the most important people to try to attract right now are people who know their game-making. Players are nice, of course, but that will come when the game has some polish on it. Some ways this could be done, off the top of my head, are: Reaching out to contacts current team members/players have in the industry who may be interested in a semi-open-source project, posting more behind-the-scenes type stuff on YouTube and networking using PlaneShift's current channel, and expanding PlaneShift's online presence to places like Reddit (I see we have a subreddit but the posts are a year old already).
