spybots...
« on: June 13, 2003, 09:35:50 pm »
I\'ve got a question for ya, I\'ve noticed that the last few days the game has gotten even slower, and yesterday I got a message that said I got a message saying I was running dangerously low on resources, then the computer crashed, my mind went right to spybots, so I dl\'d search and destroy, had 27, now, I don\'t know myself, just what I\'ve been told, is it true that spybots use your ram anytime you\'re online?

You mean spyware?  I\'d say they use the net every time they transmit their information back to wherever it came from.  Personally, I just don\'t install them onto my computers.  Maybe it\'s just me, but I can usually \"sniff\" out potential spyware and avoid it easily enough :)

After reading this, I went to update my sniffer and checked for spyware. I found...get ready...143 instances, including cookies, registry entries, and programs.

One free program that seems to work well (what I used) is Lavasoft\'s Ad-Aware. You can find it here.

ok, i\'ve seen TONS of spyware on my brother\'s winxp partition, but i don\'t seem to get any on linux ...is spyware really OS dependant? ...if it is: neat :D ...and, yea i use the same p2p protocols, only differerent apps for it (xmule instead of overnet/emule/..., bittorent for anime, i only don\'t use imesh (my brother does)) and get no spyware

p.s. bittorent and xmule are both cross-platform (and open-sourced), so no matter what OS you use, they\'ll work :]
p.p.s. for a little list of what you can dl using bittorent (which is REALLY fast!!!) visit http://a.scarywater.net

1. Spyware is OS dependent.  Like Viruses, 95-99% of the people who develop them either a) don\'t think about Linux (BSD, Mac OS X, Solaris, etc), or b) are trying to point out (in the worst way) various security flaws in Windows that Microsoft hasn\'t fixed since they released WinNT or Win 3.0.  Windows has enough security issues with it, and Microsoft has annoyed/frustrated enough of the programming/hacking community that makes it a very juicy target.  And I don\'t see that changing any time soon.

2. Spyware can be installed through Internet Explorer if you aren\'t careful about how to handle installing programs from web sites.  The fact that Internet Explorer doesn\'t have automatic & thorough pop-up window blocking doesn\'t help things either, as some pop-ups attempt to install things without you being aware.  Sure, you can get external programs to help, but 9 times out of 10, the window has to open before it gets closed, and thus it\'s job is already done.

3.  How do you detect if something\'s spyware?  Well I can\'t really explain how I do it... It\'s more of a gut feeling, really.  Partly I avoid downloading & installing little utilities, applications or games that are from companies or sites that don\'t look like they have a good reputation.  \"Shareware\" and \"Freeware\" Windows programs are frequently spyware-designed any more.  I\'ve been working with computers for so long any more, it\'s to the point of being as instinctual or natural for me to do that as it is to breathe.

Ads, if you are running on a Windows OS, then try the link i gave above to Lavasoft\'s website. Their Ad-Aware program seems to be pretty good and its free for personal use.

Spybot search and destroy is also an extremely good one which is updated regularly.

I heard some rumors though that the Ad Aware one had spies in it itself?

Is that true?

I haven\'t heard that. If anyone has sure info I would welcome knowing.

As far as I know, Ad-Aware came well recomended and this is the first I\'ve heard anything like that.
