The Amdeneir Yule Ball
« on: November 21, 2016, 01:50:47 am »

You might have seen the flyers in the billboard. Well, the thing is that simple: a ball to celebrate the end of the harvest season, and commemorate the visit from Xiosia that one time that no one barely remembers. It'll take place the 16th of December of this year, at 16:00 Western-Central European Time (one hour less for brits), so 14:00 UTC. Let me think...

* Next day

Don't take these for granted: if you're unsure, check the calendar and gossip in game!

Also: bring your best formal clothes, armor is advised against, although ornamental weapons will be allowed within their scabbards at all time. If you bring a gift, you'll be entered into a small Secret Santa (name pending) event, too!

*Izzabella wraps up a lump of coal* "Bring a gift huh?"

Looks like an interesting event to crash attend. I should be able to make this.

Title says it all. Find out more about those flyers in game! Whenever they appear of course.

Re: The Amdeneir Yule Ball [Lag warning!]
« Reply #4 on: November 24, 2016, 08:07:07 pm »
Ok, it has been my concern for the last few days that perhaps I've been putting too many items in my house. As we say where I live, "the more sugar the sweetest," but I'm afraid that, sweet as it might be, the HdF guildhouse might be too sweet for some of the oldest computers - mine included (256Mb of VRAM, 8Gb RAM, 3.06GHz).

First of all, a small explanation and list of factors that cause this lag:
- Carpets: Carpets are a single texture on a plane, double sided. PlaneShift doesn't like double-sided textures, or so I'm told, so that might be what was causing a lot of the bugs entering and leaving the house.
- Candles: I don't have any candles, but I suppose that the fire shader, just like the campfires and torches, can cause major lag in machines that are less than beefy. It's fine, you won't have to worry about that.
- Transparent or semi-transparent items: I think this is the carpet problem all over again, mixed in with a bit of the candles, too. Transparencies are managed by alpha channels in the texture that might or might not put a strain on your card.
- A lot of items: this one is simple, the more items you have, the more you have to load, the bigger strain on your card. Simple as a funnel. Also, some of them like to shuffle around when entering the guildhouse, looking out of place.

Now, as for the solutions:
- I have reduced DRASTICALLY the amount of carpets I had in the house. I'm talking about a 80% (more or less, I might be exaggerating) reduction. Now it goes from something along the lines of up to 50 carpets to a maximum of 10 or so. So there's that.
- As I said, no candles.
- The transparent items... well, I have a surprise some of you already know about, but the problem is that it uses a lot of gems and, as you know, those are transparent. This is a shaders problem, so turning them to Low will fix it, albeit harshly.
- It's been reported that when someone was lagging bad because of the items present in game, they were fine after relogging. So if you're lagging in the house, try logging off, and back on.

So, little quick recap here:
- Use a better computer if you can (this one is for myself too)
- If you can't use a better computer, ry lowering your shaders, from medium to low; it is very possible that lower resolution textures also help. No anisotropic filterin, bloom, HDR, grass, etc... You know, all those fancy settings, just no.
- Changing the background loading from Items to World might also help, but I'm not really sure and still testing how does it do.
- Relog after entering and leaving the house
- Do NOT cast spells in the guildhouse. I can't stress this enough
- Here are my settings, so they can serve you as a guide. Keep in mind I'm using PSExtended. My PC is an iMac 27" from late 2009, Intel Core 2 Duo with 3,06GHz, 256Mb VRAM, 8GB RAM, running macOS Sierra.

Oh, an don't watch YouTube on the side, mkay?

This looks a great player event idea and should be a lot of fun.

I've asked that this event be added to the events calendar page for you.

Also I'd like to point out due to daylight savings your American time zones are off by an hour.  Half the year they are like you have them but currently they are like this:
Eastern Standard Time (EST) -5 GMT
Central Standard Time (CST) -6 GMT
Mountain Standard Time (MST)-7 GMT
Pacific Standard Time  (PST) -8 GMT

Makes your event VERY early for some American players (6:00am-9:00am for most)
I'm very responsible, whenever something goes wrong they always say I'm responsible.

Any Event idea find us on IRC #ps-event
Problem Ingame use IRC: #Planeshift-gmtalk

Event is early (Friday being a normal working day) for most Europeans as well, 2-4 pm are working hours. Note that your offsets are also still using DST (summer time) for European time zones as well, since now UTC is the same as British time, CET is UTC+1 and EET is UTC+2. Of course if the event is to be held at 16:00 CET, it is actually going to start at 15:00 UTC. Still early (3-5 pm in Europe) but slightly better.

I guess I'll be pushing them back a little, then? Can someone smarter than me tell me what the times would be if I wanted to push the event back 2 hours?

Back 2 hrs? or forward 2?  Give me a time and put it in a zone.
And no one was calling you dumb! Time zones are so confusing so don't worry! Some of us have a bit of practice with it is all.

Back 2 hours, i.e.: from 1600 to 1800 in my timezone, I'm one hour ahead of Greenwich. And I said someone smarter, not more intelligent :P

That's ahead two hours! You can't go back to 18:00 from 14:00 you're moving ahead at that point :P That's why you confused me. But anyways here you go then:

17:00 (5:00pm) GMT
18:00 (6:00pm) GMT +1
19:00 (7:00pm) GMT +2
20:00 (8:00pm) GMT +3
21:00 (9:00pm) GMT +4
22:00 (10:00pm) GMT +5
23:00 (11:00pm) GMT +6
12:00 (12:00pm) GMT +7 *Next day
01:00 (1:00am) GMT +8 *Next day
03:00 (3:00am) GMT +10 *Next day
16:00 (4:00pm) GMT -1
15:00 (3:00pm) GMT -2
14:00 (2:00pm) GMT -3
13:00 (1:00pm) GMT -4
12:00 (12:00pm) GMT -5
11:00 (11:00am) GMT -6
10:00 (10:00am) GMT -7
09:00 (9:00am) GMT -8
08:00 (8:00am) GMT -9
07:00 (7:00am) GMT -10

I gave it to you in military and am/pm time formats. Please use these times to edit and change your original post because I like the flags and names your time zone has to offer, I'm just being to lazy to do all of that. And then you also won't have extra confusion because people will look at those times not read all the comments.
