Mic support
« on: June 20, 2003, 05:27:40 am »
Wouldn\'t it be nice if there where a mic support in planeshift?
Of course, you could mute everybody if they start to annoy you, but it would be nice when talking to buddies or guild members so you could speak insted of typing.

Really, how long are you going to play with modem this game? Modems are just too slow for this type of game.

But if there where an option, so you could take the mic support off before connectin to game?

i\'m not very fond of this idea ...we\'re no shoot\'em\'up ...plus i see no actual gain from it ...well, apart from accessibility, which could would IMO have to be (if it will be) done as voice-recognition, and not as a direct mic2speaker

If you feel like chatting with your friends, its not exactly hard to put up a channel on Teamspeak or Ventrilo. Me and my friend did that awhile ago on W3.. it doesnt add that much, perhaps in games like CS, but in PS.. Id rather see that the devs used their times on things like design, quests etc.
Browsing the forums when I\'m bored, nothing more.

The obvious disadvantage which you guys are missing is that theres no filters for bad language, this means the highly sensitive and posh ppl will be complaining.

Guilds that want to chat and things could set up there own channel or use roger wilco already, although i still speak to tribes people on this. Hm.... a planeshift radio station set up on winamp... could have all latest planeshift news as well as latest guilds info, as well as cool music :D

I personally would love to see speech chat in planeshift, but none of you would be able to understand my accent :D

well, now PS isn\'t like that, and noone that posted here is a dev, so there\'s no trace of it being implemented (\"shortly\")

\"making the game for the elite\"? ...never heard that phrase ...it WAS said that you need quite a beast to run the CURRENT version SMOOTHLY, since the code\'s not optimised yet

i share caldazar\'s feelings on this

Voice takes up a lot of bandwidth.  I don\'t think putting this through the plain shift server is a good idea.  I agree with hook that voice recognition is the way to go.  That substantially reduces bandwidth problems.  Can you imagine trying to handle over 1000 microphones going through a server?

In a previous post I believe vengeance said the required bandwidth is less than two kbyte per second with the current version per player.  Voice would blow the top off that even compressed.

So I think it\'s a bad idea even if it was easy to implement and everybody had a cable modem. I think Caldazar has the right idea.  Do-it-yourself if you want it and don\'t try to get through the plain shift server.

I think mic support is a great idea that should be encouraged.  It is the next step in the evolution for the MMORPG.  Granted, mic support has been used primarily in the FPS markets, I think the MMORPGs could benefit from it.  There is nothing worse than trying to issue strategy or vital info in combat via the keyboard.  I am suprised no other games have implemented this yet.  But one thing is for sure, this is coming.  Maybe not in PS, but another game will do it in the future for sure.

As for the acutal implementation, it should goes as follows.

-Mic use and hearing voice in game should be an opt-in option.  A player must set up the ability to play voice, as it is not a default.

-A seperate server should handle all voice communication.  PS has had many people want to be a game server. I would imagine just as many would volunteer to be a voice server.

-Low quality, (radio), transmission only.  No need for crystal clear sound.

-Low latency connections only.  Sorry modem people.  Time to upgrade.

As for the modem users...  I was a modem user for about 6 years.  Then I moved to a DSL.  Then I lost my job and could not afford a high-bandwidth connection for 6 months.  Now I am on cable.  During my return to the high ping world, guess how many online games I played?  None.  Not one.  (Talk about hell)  Why?  It is too irritating to deal with.  It makes everyone with a good connection angry because you slow everyone else down.  My philiosophy is if you can afford to buy a game in the store, you can afford a good connection.  Stop eating those extra value meals.  Take a break from going out and drinking.  Hold off on buying those new shoes.  If you cant pay for it, thats your problem.  Dont ruin my gaming experience because you want to complain that you dont want a feature implemented because it would make your gaming experience more difficult.  Every game you modem-users get into ruins it for the people that pay extra for the speed.  AOL costs 22.95 or something like that a month.  You can get Comcast cable for the same for 6 months.  When that runs out, cancel then reapply.  Wide Open West has some cheaper options.  Look around and get the connection.  Thats my rant.

Thanks for reading.

Some people still CAN\'T upgrade.  As much as you\'d like to believe it, broadband still isn\'t available in all parts of the country.

no.

mic support should NEVER be implemented in a game which children have access to. I have a little boy who watches me play, having text cussing is alright, when my boy can read I can turn on a filter for it, there would be no way for me to filter that language if it was coming through my speaker, and if I turned it off, I would have a time communicating with others that are using the mic

no matter that I use a dial up, even if I upgraded, I still wouldn\'t support it, just because there are a lot of foul mouths out there, some even take pleasure in finding ways to cuss that break through filters in normal chat, I can\'t imagine the field day they would have with a voice chat interface with a game

the other day I was on AC, and someone kept breaking the language filter, I told him to stop because my vassal was 8, he started cussing my vassal out in /tells, it\'s freakin rediculous.

oh, and your cost plan for high speed internet is off a bit, where I\'m at, dial up is 9 dollars, yet any high speed connection is $56(lowest rate in town, sbc DSL, second, 64.95 is charter digital cable) it runs different in some towns, but it\'s expensive as hell here

there\'s no way I\'m paying more for internet access than I do on electric and phone combined, you\'re just going to have to get used to it, and you know what? since dial up provides half their customers, gaming corporations aren\'t going to drop us either. Star Wars Galaxies was considering it, but decided it wasn\'t worth the drop in clientel

Well it would have some goodthings,, forexample you seldom get to practice English speech so it might be educational..

But still I agree with all the problems people has posted here,, and even IF it would be solved I don\'t exactly think it\'s worth it..
Put the pot down, no dont take another puff!, put it down. Thank you.
