Mac client: what happen?
« on: June 20, 2003, 09:59:15 pm »
I\'ve been watching this game from afar for a long time, hoping to try it whenever a client becomes available that will run on Mac OS X.  It\'s turning into a long wait. . .   What\'s the hold up?

My guess is that devs are using their time more constructive, not concentrating on making the game compatible with mac just yet, but using the time to actually complete the game...

Hey Xhalthar, just to let you know that your post comes dangerously close to mac-bashing, by implying that developing the game for mac is not worth the devs time.

:)

Well, we have no \'full time\' Mac person on the team.  We have a couple of people that are building it here and there on a Mac but nobody working on it consistantly.  I think that a lot of the porting stuff is ok and it is just a matter of testing it out.  But with none of us on a Mac it is hard to do.

I am one of the people who occasionally does a Mac build of the current (CVS) version.
Currently a client isn\'t being made public because it would require changes to the Molecular Blue server which everyone is using.  The server-side changes have been taken care of in the current pre-CrystalBlue version and I believe that the hope is for a Mac version alongside the Crystal Blue release.

One of the original problems with the Mac version was that the Crystalspace engine ran into performance trouble on the Mac (around late 2002), but that seems to have been avoided since then (either by Apple or CS, I don\'t remember)

Oh, and Keitac2000: die a flaming, horrible death :D

We are committed to reach a good stability in the Mac port, but right now we are missing good devs on Mac.

The good news is that CS is moving to a new renderer that should work better on MacOS. As soon as next release is out, we will make more efforts to port it to Mac and test it. I remember you that we didn\'t release the Mac OS version of MB because was going really slow and not playable. Anyway the code was ported and working, so as soon as the renderer improves, the Mac version should not be hard to release.

macs suck, for about everything, but hey thats a whole other subject.

anyways, maybe i\'m dumb, but seeing as how your using opengl, why not convert the code to glut or sdl etc which should work on mac?

Crystal Space already works on the Mac.  The problem is in the performance of it.

bleh, I\'ll bash all the stupid macs I want.. besides I wasn\'t implying anything those 6 months ago...

I don\'t use a mac, but I\'d like to see PS compatible for as many comps and OS\'s as possible.. but of course I want it out on PC first..!

Let\'s not board that flight, OK?

Incidentally, I\'m one of those who tested the previous Mac software that had the brutal performance issues.  I\'m still available to test new releases anytime.

They will retest it when Crystal Blue is out (hopefully within the next couple months).  Wait until then.

As far as I can tell, performance issues have been fixed in CrystalSpace even in the old renderer (I haven\'t got the NR fully working on my mac, although it *is* still experimental)
