Funny thing:

The Record companies are always complaining about 30 million loss due to download here, loss due to download there, but i think there\'s a big flaw in their way of thinking. I have about 800 illegal mp3\'s on my PC. Due to their way of thinking that would be several hunderds of dollars loss to them. But, If I couldn\'t download this music, would I have bought all the songs i have? Of course not. Probably not even 10% of it. SO they are making much less loss from downloading then they say they are.

On top of that, CDs are still way to expensive. I\'d pay 25 euro\'s for an album, and I probably don\'t even like all the songs on it.

I like the Guano Apes. I recently bought their first DVD. I would\'ve never heard of them if I hadn\'t accidentally downloaded a song of them.

Finally, all the money that they lose due to illegal downloading is probably gained back in concerts. Concerts became WAY to expensive, while the quality of concerts drop. \'Artists\' like Britney Spears etc, get on playback some songs for half an hour, and hop back in their plane. Thats what I call thievery.

Games have it that way... they are called underdogs when they get old (or so I believe) and you can get most of them for free at various \"old games\" sites.. I just don\'t think music works the same way

Those are also called \'Abandonware\'. But that will never work on music. Go to a store and count the amount of old CDs. Stores would have nothing left to sell.

<Worf> These are the moments when my ego gets put back on the ground. I use linux for quite some time, and am soon 2 years maintainer of a linux distribution. I started to think I would be good at it. But then I tried to get planeshift running.

LOL, close xal, but no cigar

underdogs is where much of that stuff can be found
it\'s called abandonware, and it\'s not technically legal, but it\'s not enforced legally either, most gaming companies don\'t care if you\'re downloading a bunch of ten year old software, but some of them do, if you\'ll look around, it\'s nearly impossible to find a copy of leisure suit larry or space quest... that\'s because Sierra online really doesn\'t like abandonware sites and have issued a warning that if any site should be caught handing out thier copyrighted materials, they will press charges, that includes any of their games, including the old kings quest 1. however, it\'s almost impossible to find some of their good old titles without downloading off the web. I\'ve been looking for a copy of the laura bow mystery games for a long time, but can\'t find them anywhere.

sierra\'s not the only company that does this, but they\'re the worst about actually pressing charges
we are the music-makers, we are the dreamers of dreams - Gene Wilder as willy wonka

Johnny Depp\'s a poser to the throne. No one will ever play the part as well as Gene Wilder

Yeah, that\'s it :]

And yeah, most companies don\'t like that their copyrighted material is given away for free, but I got a lot of good old games from companies that don\'t exist anymore that way..
I could imagine sierra being the worst, since they are one of the largest companies, but I actually only own two games they have published.. those being Arcanum: of steamworks and magic obscura and Birthright: the gorgon\'s alliance
both great games, but both didn\'t do great on the sales market, so they have the criteria for becoming abandonware... But they will never be...
