Risk Your Life
« Reply #15 on: July 01, 2003, 08:14:23 pm »
Risk Your Life is a chinese MMORGP currently in open beta that I believe is the answer some of you are looking for and the game some of you think can\'t be done.

I have not played it but a co-worker has.  You most likely will need a broadband connection as that is the only connection that he played it on.  We haven\'t tried it on a 56k connection.

Anyways the game is twitch-based.  It does however have 2 elements to it.  First-person and RPG mode.  First person essentially lets you execute moves and attacks on the fly.  Enemy coming at you?  Then just dodge left or right, swing around and cut his back (or something)

The RPG mode is, I believe, the more traditional turn based method but you may be able to pull real-time moves there as well.

The graphics engine is along the lines of AC2, Lineage MMORPG, and Final Fantasy XI.  The look and feel of the game is remeniscent of the Final Fantasy series.

The game is completely in chinese as is the website but there are english speaking players in game who can help.

Here are some links.  Again the game is in open Beta.
the registration code is 555-555-5555 or some combination of 10 fives and 2 dashes.

Gameplay movies from the offical site:

I have yet to play it myself but I\'ve been told first hand that the game runs very stable and the spell effects outstanding.  The kind that are just over-the-top and take up the whole screen like in those console RPGs.

The machine specs that it was played on:
DSL (broadband connection)
IWILL motherboard
Pentium 4
256 RAMBUS RAM
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
40 GB Maxtor ATA 133
Windows XP Pro
Direct X 9.0

Can you say: Commercial Break?
Browsing the forums when I\'m bored, nothing more.

If anyone here has played Silent Hill on Playstation, they used a fog effect in that game to reduce draw distance so they could cram better graphics in without overloading it. Basically, anyone who\'s been to the top of the tower will know that the game runs slow if you can see a lot of the city, or if you can see lots of complex structures, because the computer has to draw so much. If they put fog in, a lot would be obscured so the game would have less to draw, and would run faster.

that\'s not at all what I\'m talking about tho, I\'m talking about no matter how little drawing has to be done, there will always be lag, little bits of information get delayed or lost all the time. it\'s why I had to download the client five times before I got it to work. it\'s called lag and there\'s no way to fix it for sure.

For the fighting, couldn\'t we just have an option, iIknow some diehard fps people that have a hard time with the whole \"Im not actually fighting!? 8o  X( \" thing.
So for them they can have a manual fighting option.
But for people with a slow connection they should be allowed to set up their account for auto fighting.

and I played ragnarok online (3D world 2D characters) , which i mentioned once before, when i played on dial-up, it actaully ran more smoothly than when i played with my dsl connection, (however, my service stinks with DSL).

I think we should keep all options open.

I really liked the idea behind the Star Wars Galaxies combat system. It is semi turned based and definitly not switch. But there are lots of abilities and tactics you can use. (Or could they have sort of ruined it now). Things like going prone, or going for a leg shot and getting rid of the action shot.

I don\'t think RPGs should really have twitch, one I doubt a freebie server will be as good as the mega servers they must have at Origin and sony (and there is still plenty of server side lag). And secondly, you stop playing a character in the world if you add twitch. It becomes you in the world (like in CS).

Having LOADS of abilities and tactics I think could be still very fun.
