Cheating...
« on: June 28, 2003, 10:00:42 am »
I don\'t know much about making cheats, bots and the like for games, but it would seem to me this game would be an easy target for such things.  I haven\'t looked, but it might be possible they exist now even (as sad as that is).  I just wanted to know, what, if any, precautions or plans there are to deal with this.  Any free game is going to be a huge target for arse holes that use that kind of garbage to attack, and I think therein lies the greatest danger of what could be the downfall of Planeshift.
Ninjas have feelings too.  Mostly they feel like dancing.

we just need to have EVERYTHING that\'s importaint on the server not the client ...the client\'s the one that\'s easy to hack ...the client would IMO only need to store the textures, GUI and sounds ...everything else should be in/on the server ...i\'ve nothing aginst skinning, or making your client look different, until the skin fits into PS

would that solve everything though? I mean all you have to do to set up a bot is to run a macro, which simulates keystrokes in a window
we are the music-makers, we are the dreamers of dreams - Gene Wilder as willy wonka

Johnny Depp\'s a poser to the throne. No one will ever play the part as well as Gene Wilder

that\'s true, but do you see a solution to that ...well, except that there\'s no scripts (or macros) in PS supported

one solution would be to MD5 every single file of the client, and check if it\'s ok, and if there are no other files in the PS dir(s). ...maybe MD5 is a bit harsh, and wouldn\'t work on binaries compiled from source, but for the unwanted/unknown files it would work IMHO
